What does exactly the Cleaning in Silo mean? A dystopian TV series set in a world where the Earth appears uninhabitable, it unfolds inside a gigantic 144-level bunker where survival is dictated by very strict rules, then broken by Juliette Nichols. From the very first season, Juliette has ardently sought to uncover the truth, edging closer to dangerous answers. One of the main rules established in Silo concerns the Cleaning: anyone who must be punished or wishes to go outside while voicing the request aloud is sent outside the Silo to “clean.” But what exactly is the Cleaning for? Let’s make it clear.
Silo, the meaning of the “cleaning” explained
In the first episode of the first season, Silo introduced two characters who seemed key only to then reveal the real protagonist. Holston is the sheriff, and his wife Allison discovers a video about the outside world that drives her to believe the Earth is habitable. Thinking she has been deceived, Allison asks to go out and is granted her request, only to die shortly thereafter. Her husband, some time later, will decide to follow her example, dying at her side once outside the Silo. Juliette Nichols, however, is forced to abandon Silo 18 by Bernard, but she obtains a small technical aid that protects her from poison and not only does she refuse to clean, but she moves beyond the hill to reach another Silo, breaking numerous rules. But what is the Cleaning for?
As has been shown so far, the residents of the Silo who are sent outside to clean are generally people exiled in the outside world, whose task is to clean the external sensor that shows what it looks like out there on a screen inside the bunker. However, once outside the Silo, anyone who has been exiled can decide to behave as they please, because they are outside the Pact. The Cleaning has a further objective: by cleaning the sensor, Silo residents can see with their own eyes the desolation of the surface world, understanding that survival outside the Silo is virtually impossible.
What actually drives people to clean once outside is a deception. The helmet they wear is equipped with VR visors that project distorted images of the outside environment. Allison, for example, is convinced that the world is a beautiful place, with a blue sky and clear air and very green trees. It is precisely that hoax that pushes the poor soul to clean, ultimately hoping to show what she sees with her own eyes to the inhabitants of the Silo. As shown so far, the inhabitants of the Silo do not have access to cutting-edge technologies to understand that what they see is not authentic. Only Juliette, suspicious, eventually discovers the deceit because she had found the same exact video on an old hard drive and decides not to clean.
To date, Juliette appears to be the only resident of the Silo to have gone out without cleaning and returned home safe and sound. Yet, during the second season, Solo told Juliette about a man from her silo 17, Ron Tucker, who, like her, did not clean and managed to survive for a long time outside the camera’s field of view. It is not clear what happened to him. Could he have survived as Juliette did? Perhaps we will find out in the fourth and final season coming in the summer of 2027 on Apple TV.
