The fourth season of Silo, renewed at the same time as the third by Apple TV, has long been touted as the final chapter, meaning it will definitively wrap up the trials of Juliette Nichols in a post-apocalyptic world where the few survivors on Earth live inside enormous bunkers. But what fate awaits that particular character after the events of the ninth and penultimate episode of the third season? The actor who portrays her has the answer. Warning: the following references the events of the ninth episode, so anyone not up to date with the streaming schedule should stop reading here and return to this article later.
Silo 3, the fate of that controversial character: will we see him again in the final season?
The audience won’t have to wait long for the Silo fourth and final season. Just days after the end of the third season, it was announced that the fourth would arrive on Apple TV during the summer of 2027, as revealed at San Diego Comic-Con. Having secured a prompt renewal for both seasons three and four, the two seasons were shot back-to-back, so the cast already knows what happened to their respective characters.
Even Tim Robbins knows exactly what became of his Bernard, one of the series’ most controversial figures. His arc as a villain was tempered by a redemption arc in the course of the third season. Surviving the flames of season two with great difficulty, Bernard was kept alive in great secrecy by Sims with the mechanical department’s help, turning into a valuable asset for Juliette’s rebellion. Unfortunately, the turn of events forces Bernard to make a difficult choice, sacrificing himself for the greater good. Camille decides to dispose of him once and for all by sending him to clean, even without any protective suit. Once outside, Bernard witnesses the Earth’s devastation firsthand and, minutes later, collapses at the foot of a tree and even imagines how green and lush the world could have been if humanity had not destroyed everything.
But is that really the end for Bernard? In an interview with Decider, Tim Robbins reflected on the future of his character and confirmed that he will not appear in the fourth and final season. Regarding his final scene, he confessed: “It was surprisingly emotional. I’m not talking about the scene itself, even though, obviously, it’s emotional. But filming a scene where you’re dying, and not only dying, but leaving the show… I won’t be in the fourth season.” Robbins’ words thus imply that the fourth season will in no way feature Bernard, whether via flashbacks or another second chance. After all, he already faced death once, surviving the flames, but this time it seems there may be no escape. His death represents a sacrifice for the Silo: Bernard has created a decoy to give Juliette’s friends the time they need to take action. Will his sacrifice have been in vain?
