Legacy will not be the eighth season of Sons of Anarchy. Charlie Hunnam, the lead actor of the famous TV series about the SAMCRO motorcycle club, wanted to make that clear during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, also revealing that, if it were up to him, the news about developing a spin-off with the original cast would have stayed secret longer, given the uproar it stirred among fans and beyond.

Last month it emerged that FX and Hulu had ordered Legends, a new spin-off of Sons of Anarchy (which ended in 2014 after seven seasons) that deliberately toys with the line between reality and fiction. With familiar names from the series such as Hunnam (the actor who plays Jax Teller), Ron Perlman (Clarence ‘Clay’ Morrow), Katey Sagal (Gemma Teller Morrow), Maggie Siff (Tara Knowles), Mark Boone Junior (Robert ‘Bobby Elvis’ Munson), Tommy Flanagan (Filip ‘Chibs’ Telford), Kim Coates (Alexander ‘Tig’ Trager) and Theo Rossi (Juan-Carlos ‘Juice’ Ortiz), the series sees these and others facing a real threat more dangerous than anything they have confronted in SOA when they reunite at a fan convention after more than a decade.
“I wanted to keep things as private as possible, but a couple of very persistent news outlets had intuited that we were working on something, so FX chose to get ahead of it,” Hunnam said with a laugh. The series, described as a “meta-thriller,” bears the signature of the same actor. “All I can say is that it is absolutely not an eighth season of Sons of Anarchy,” he continued. “It’s the same group of actors, but we play ourselves: we embark on a wild adventure and find ourselves again after ten years apart, while having maintained a deep friendship in the meantime.”
And regarding the genesis of the project, Hunnam added: “It was my idea: a chance to reunite that group of people I care about so much. It actually came from some recurring dreams in which we were all together again. Obviously, my subconscious yearned for that experience: to go through another creative process with that group of people I loved. So I wrote something that could make all of this possible. And here we are!”
