Just as has happened in the United States, the Spanish box office remains dominated by the two blockbusters that can already be regarded as the summer’s big winners: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘La Odisea’. The two continue to lead the Spanish box office by a wide margin for another week, even though they are still running in theaters.
On the negative side, ‘El final de Oak Street’ repeats its American failure with weak numbers, and it marks another stumble for Warner, which is not enjoying a strong summer after the big numbers racked up by ‘Superman’ last year.
Turning to the data, Tom Holland’s film again tops the box office for the third consecutive week. It does so with €2,316,103 more in receipts, bringing its total in Spain to €29,625,614. These figures leave it just shy of entering the ranking of the top 10 highest-grossing films in our country, something it has already achieved in the United States as well as worldwide. This indicates that the Spanish sector is recovering more slowly than the rest of the pandemic-affected world, especially after a record summer in the United States.
If we review the current international data, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has earned 2.03 billion dollars in the position 8th among the highest-grossing films of all time. It sits only 22 million behind ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and 41 million behind ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’, which should be surpassed this same week. The question, therefore, is how much higher it will climb this list, considering that the next film after that is ‘Titanic’ with 2.264 billion.
Now we move to ‘La Odisea’ which, despite having five weeks in theaters, shows a total in our country very similar to the superhero: €29,029,237 in Spain, of which €1,651,445 are from this weekend. As we’ve been saying, Christopher Nolan’s film has a slightly higher take than Spider-Man, and it seems it could also enjoy a somewhat longer run.
‘El final de Oak Street’ also flops in Spain
As has happened in the United States, the dinosaur movie ‘El final de Oak Street’ has not managed a strong opening in our country. A modest €930,398 in third place for a film that was expected to do a lot better. Internationally it has accumulated $52 million, against the $85 million budget.
It is, certainly, not the disaster that was ‘Supergirl’ for Warner, but it is the studio’s second stumble at a moment when its business is being scrutinized amid Paramount’s takeover bid.
The rest of the Spanish box office offers few surprises, with figures well below those of the top three. In fourth place, the second week of ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’ earns €330,480 for a total that approaches €1.4 million.
In fifth place, one of the ongoing hits of recent weeks, the tireless ‘Minions & Monsters’ which has been there for seven weeks, and achieves a not insignificant €12.3 million at the Spanish box office. An estimated 221,161 of that total were earned this weekend.
The other release of the week that cracks the top 10 leads the second half of the ranking. We are talking about the French film that blends animation with live action, ‘Marsupilami’. The film earns €188,445, which for a French production is not bad at all.
Three other films that are also holding up very well are ‘Obsession’ in seventh place (€168,475), ‘Toy Story 5’ in eighth (€160,337) and ‘Moana’ in ninth (€157,378). Specifically, ‘Moana’, which did not start well at the box office, has redeemed itself in Spain by reaching a box office of €7.893 million. In total, the film has earned $293 million worldwide, not enough to make the film profitable, which had a high budget of $250 million.
The box office ranking closes this week with the film ‘En mar abierto’, which records about €114,733 in its second week, for a total gross of €494,031.
