Spider-Man: Brand New Day Continues to Dominate Box Office Despite The End of Oak Street’s Disappointing Debut

After two weeks roaming freely, the US box office for this weekend had anticipated more movement and competition. Ultimately, that wasn’t the case. The disappointing debut of ‘The End of Oak Street’ has allowed ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to reclaim the weekend box office lead for a third time in theaters. And by a comfortable margin.

The Tom Holland-led film has pulled in another $70 million in gross, representing a 51.5% drop from the previous year. These figures lift the US tally to $785 million.

This weekend, the film hit another milestone: it surpassed $2.0 billion in worldwide gross. The movie now stands, by a wide margin, as the year’s top-grossing release and seems set to retain that title through the end of December. Not only that, with $2,021,831,670 in the till, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already cemented itself as the eighth-highest grossing film in history, having overtaken ‘No Way Home’. Now the movie has two straightforward milestones ahead, which are to surpass ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2.052 billion) and ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ (2.071 billion). This would place ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as the sixth-highest grossing film of all time, and it should achieve it within the next week.

‘The Odyssey’ Also Outperforms ‘The End of Oak Street’

The stellar numbers for ‘Spider-Man’ are, in a way, eclipsing the excellent performance that ‘The Odyssey’ continues to deliver. In its fifth week on release, Nolan’s film remains in second place once again, adding another $23.2 million and bringing its total in the United States to $504 million.

The movie is already the second-biggest earner of the year at the box office with a cumulative total of $1.29 billion, and sits in 27th place on the all-time list, though it shouldn’t have much trouble rising to the top 20 in the coming days. A remarkable run for a film of this kind.

The End of Oak Street

Less favorable was the release of ‘The End of Oak Street’, a dinosaur-themed film that critics have praised but that appears not to have captivated audiences to the same extent. After early reviews and a strong Thursday preview showing, experts had forecast a debut as high as $30 million. However, the film cooled over the weekend, earning a CinemaScore of B and receiving a less enthusiastic reception from general audiences. Ultimately, the film claimed third place by a narrow margin, with $21 million in gross compared to $20.5 million for the fourth place.

The Warner picture added another $26 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $47 million. With a budget close to $80 million, it seems Warner will again struggle to turn a profit on another cinematic project, though it is far from the disaster of ‘Supergirl’.

Stellar Numbers for ‘Paw Patrol’

Speaking of dinosaurs, one of the weekend’s real surprises has been ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’. The film opened fourth, but only half a million behind the third, with $20.5 million in gross—remarkable for a film targeting such a narrow age range.

With a budget around $40 million, the Dino Movie fared considerably better abroad, collecting $48.5 million internationally for a worldwide total of $69 million.

The rest of the US box office leaves three more debuts in the next positions of the ranking, all well behind ‘Paw Patrol’. The fifth place goes to ‘Katseye: Wild Hearts’, a concert film about this multicultural American group, which earns $3.95 million.

The sixth place is for ‘Six: The Musical Live!’, the simulcast of this popular West End musical. $3 million. And one more debut in seventh place with ‘The Brink of War’, a political thriller starring Jeff Daniels, which grosses $2.684 million.

After nine weeks on the chart, ‘Toy Story 5’ is set to exit the top 10 with another $2.3 million in receipts, bringing its US box office total to over $475 million.

In the penultimate position sits the second installment of ‘One Night a Year’, which posts a drop of 63.7% and $2 million in box office.

The ranking closes with the Indian film ‘Vishwanath and Sons’, which in its opening week earns $1.634 million.
