Spider-Man: Brand New Day Dominates the Spanish Box Office with Over 8 Million in Opening Weekend

The phenomenon of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is not solely a United States affair. The film also swept Spain, confirming that the web-slinger remains the Spaniards’ favorite superhero. Thanks to “spidey”, the Spanish box office over the past weekend posted its best gross of the year, totaling 12.93 million euros. This figure stands above both the year’s opening weekend with ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and the May long weekend when ‘Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie’ premiered.

The Tom Holland-led movie finished its first weekend with a gross of 8,020,823 euros, clearly establishing itself as the number 1 at the box office. Moreover, since the film opened on a Wednesday, its total by Sunday is now 13.67 million dollars. This means that 1.8 million people have gone to theaters to catch up with the superhero’s adventures.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is still far from becoming Spain’s highest-grossing film of the year, although it could reach that mark soon if it keeps up this pace. It has, however, achieved worldwide, in record time, the status of the year’s top-grossing movie, with an impressive $1.155 billion earned, easily surpassing ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Michael’, which had been climbing toward that figure gradually.

And it’s precisely because ‘Spider-Man’ has also dominated in China. With $121 million earned there alone, success in the Asian nation provides the final push needed to reach the highest positions in today’s box office.

With these figures, it’s time to consult another ranking—the all-time list of the highest-grossing films. There, the movie currently sits at number 32, but strong performance on its second weekend could place it directly inside the top 10. For now, the film’s primary objective is to surpass its predecessor ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which sits at 8th with $1.921 billion. We should note that this ranking isn’t inflation-adjusted, and the film opens this week on IMAX screens in the United States, so surpassing that box office should not be overly difficult.

‘La odisea’ supera los 20 millones en España

The second position on the weekend ranking goes to ‘La Odisea’, which, despite the competition, only drops 38% in its third week, confirming its strong reception. The Christopher Nolan film hit another milestone in its short run in our country by surpassing the 20 million euro mark, of which 2,987,535€ come from this past weekend.

A partir de aquí, el resto de la taquilla ya sufre una caída notable, con todas las demás películas por debajo de medio millón de euros, la mayoría con títulos que llevan ya varias semanas en cartelera. El tercer puesto lo ocupa ‘Minions & Monsters’, que en España está registrando un rendimiento mucho más sólido que en la mayoría de países. La película de Illumination logra 431,314 euros, para un total de 11,355,599 euros.

Puestos cuatro y cinco para dos películas de Disney con rendimientos notablemente distintos. En el 4, ‘Vaiana’ suma 348,840 euros a sus modestos 6.8 millones en taquilla. Todo lo contrario sucede con ‘Toy Story 5’, que en quinta posición ya supera los 18 millones en nuestro país, y en esta (su séptima semana) sumó 300,689€ más.

En sexto lugar continúa el fenómeno del año, ‘Obsesión’, que sigue sumando espectadores y ya supera los 8 millones de euros recaudados. 271,994 euros fueron los del fin de semana. A nivel mundial, la película acumula ya 475 millones de dólares recaudados, para un presupuesto de menos de 1 millón de dólares.

Séptimo puesto para la segunda semana de la española ‘Tres de más’, que se deja un 48% respecto a su estreno y factura 200.784 euros. En octavo lugar nos encontramos con ‘Posesión infernal: En llamas’ (103.319€) y en noveno con ‘Haciendo amigos’ (67.684€).

Para cerrar el ranking, un estreno: la película italiana ‘La última ronda en Venecia’, que logra colarse en el top con 41.382 euros de taquilla provenientes de solo 41 salas. Supera a ‘Mother Mary’, que también se estrenó este fin de semana y no pasó del puesto 12 con 27.726 euros, pese a disponer de 102 salas.
