It’s still tearing up the box office in theaters, and yet it’s not enough. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie and its success has been such that no one has managed to knock it off over the entire summer. Well, stay tuned because Sony has its own plans to push it further up the list of historically successful feature films: work is already underway on an extended version for a theatrical re-release.
The news comes from Variety, where they confirm that Sony is working on the project. That said, no dates have been set nor is there any information about what the additional material could be, which could range from a simple post-credits scene to the inclusion of subplots cut in the editing room. We’ll have to stay tuned.
Re-release Fever
It seems Hollywood is getting a taste for the idea of reissuing its most popular films with extra material. This very year we’ve seen that happen with ‘Backrooms’, which surprised us with the ‘Total Liquidation’ edition. We don’t have to look far in the genre, because at the time of writing this article, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is enjoying a second wave of glory with its ‘Encore’ edition, which directly ties into Marvel’s upcoming projects.
Both projects focused on adding their extra material at the end of their stories, and if there’s one thing the industry loves, it’s winning formulas. Depending on when the new version of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ hits theaters, it could include scenes that connect it to the upcoming ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, or perhaps a nod to ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, slated for 2027. Or perhaps it isn’t about any of that and is simply an opportunity to expand the stories of some of its characters. Who knows? Maybe we’ll finally learn what happened in Staten Island.
Long Live the Wall-Crawler
There is currently no information on what form Tom Holland’s fifth Spider-Man movie might take, but Sony seems clear that the character has a future. The one that isn’t clear is for ‘Spider-Noir’, which after just one season has been cancelled in midsummer. Who knows what the company might prepare for the license, in addition to the aforementioned sequel to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and its spin-off, ‘Spider-Punk’.
