Spider-Man Brand New Day: The Billionaire Superpower That Benefits Sony

Can a single film make a difference in a major studio’s bottom line? It happens rarely… and it was bound to happen for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, responsible for Sony’s extraordinary numbers in the July–September 2026 quarter, a promising setup for a radiant year-end, with the release on November 19 of the video game GTA VI, treated as a PlayStation 5 exclusive due to specific marketing deals with Rockstar (even though a simultaneous release on Xbox Series X/S is planned). Let’s look at this year’s and last year’s figures to weigh this big move.

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day Box Office Booms Lift Sony’s Balances

Sony Pictures Entertainment reported earnings of $581 million in the July–September 2026 quarter. What’s unusual about a major? Only that in the corresponding quarter of the prior year the figure stood at “only” $93 million! What films are responsible for this 527% jump? We can name the one: Spider-Man Brand New Day. The Destin Daniel Cretton film starring Tom Holland, and Sadie Sink climbed to a worldwide box office total of $2.52 billion, thereby taking the largest slice of those $581 million in cumulative revenue across all Sony releases during those three months. Of course, the cinematic licensing agreement between Sony and Disney remains in place: Marvel Studios, while overseeing the films on behalf of Sony, are entitled to a portion of the revenues, but as is evident even under these terms it makes perfect sense for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe to continue existing for the Japanese conglomerate. Considering how central the pull of Peter Parker is to the superhero film and the Marvel world in general, Disney has little reason to complain: it’s already clear that it will reap the rewards this Christmas with Avengers: Doomsday.
As for Sony overall, the announced profits are broadly increasing, with the prospect of GTA VI landing on the PlayStation 5 on November 19, a release the major is counting on heavily to push the console (to such an extent that it has arranged a special marketing campaign with Rockstar Games, effectively marketing the game as if it were a PS5 exclusive).
