Spider-Man Lands on TV: Prime Video Live-Action Series Close to Canon

Apparently, Prime Video has given up Spider-Man Noir to make room for Spider-Man in person. More or less. The streaming service is reportedly about to order a new live-action series set in the universe of the beloved Marvel character. The show draws from one of the most famous — and controversial — storylines in Marvel comics, the Clone Saga, and more precisely its second narrative arc, focusing on two Spider-Man clones: Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker.

Spider-Man: who are Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker?

Awaiting official news from Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, Deadline reports that the project is in the hands of the creator of American Born Chinese Kelvin Yu. In the comics, Ben Reilly is a successful and stable Spider-Man clone, whose name blends Uncle Ben’s given name with Aunt May’s maiden surname, and who develops his own superhero identity, that of the Scarlet Spider. Kaine Parker, on the other hand, is the first Spider-Man clone, marked by serious flaws. In those stories, one of the most controversial twists leads to the idea that Ben Reilly is the real Spider-Man and Peter Parker the clone, a revelation that was later overturned in response to strong negative fan reactions.

In light of this, it seems the series will draw inspiration from those stories but will introduce significant changes. It is said that it will follow the two characters as they attempt to come to terms with their new clone identities and face other clones, including one who in the comics adopts the identity of Spidercide. Other rumors, however, suggest that the series could alter the origins of Ben and Kaine, assigning them different identities.

The new series would ideally take the place of Spider-Noir, canceled this month after only one season. That show starred Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, whose alter ego was the character giving the series its title. Not as in the comics, where Spider-Man Noir is Peter Parker. An identity altered due to rights-related constraints.
