The cult classic ‘Spring Breakers’ is getting a sequel, surprisingly enough. Fourteen years after its premiere there are already people working on it, expanding the cast with different castings and paving the way for a new generation of rebellious girls. And we have a name for who will helm the feature film, both bringing the script to life and directing the film in full: Bella Thorne.
The actress who was once a Disney girl is ready to break the stereotypes of her kind of roles, as the original protagonists did. Gone are her days of ‘Shake It Up!’ on Disney Channel, and she promises something more rebellious, furious and even defiant toward the status quo and modern society.
Promising Director
Thorne had the opportunity to discuss this chance in an interview with the Call Her Daddy channel. There she elaborated on how excited she is about the project and how the interest in putting her in charge came about. “The producers saw ‘Color Your Hurt’, which is the film I just finished, a first cut of the edit,” explains. “They asked me to write something to see if they liked it. And they loved it! And now I am writing and directing ‘Spring Breakers 2′”.
Of course, she hasn’t been able to give too many details about the sequel’s plot, but she says she is having a blast with the project. “I don’t want to get into trouble, but what I can say is that it is an absolute blast. From start to finish, it’s an absolute blast. We’re having a great time. If you want to go to the cinema and have fun, with this movie you’re going to have a great time, that’s for sure.”
A Complicated Classic
Back in its day, ‘Spring Breakers’ generated plenty of chatter. The film divided critics and audiences, but those who found value in it fell in love with it, elevating it to a cult work of well-deserved recognition. The sequel aims not only to replicate its success but to delve into a similar message that would fully shake up what many viewers may expect from modern actresses and the corruption of youth. Bella Thorne, in that sense, is a good candidate to direct and star in the film, as she has previously stood out for her quirks.
