Stan Lee’s Favorite Marvel Villain Was… Doctor Doom
Who was Stan Lee’s favorite Marvel supervillain? The question came from KJ Ricci, a 14-year-old leukemia survivor who had the opportunity to meet the legendary Marvel author in person.
When KJ asked him which villain he favored, Lee didn’t hesitate: Doctor Doom. Lee’s relationship with Latveria’s ruler was decidedly peculiar. In his eyes, Doom wasn’t really a villain. Or at least not in the traditional sense of the term.
Why, According to Stan Lee, Doctor Doom Wasn’t Really a Villain
Lee’s reasoning started from the character’s ambitions. Doctor Doom wants to conquer the world, but the desire to govern it, in his view, did not automatically constitute a crime. He even joked about the possibility that once Doom had control of the planet, he might do a better job than the people who currently run it.
A provocation that, in fact, perfectly captures one of the most intriguing aspects of the character. Doom rarely regards himself as the story’s villain. On the contrary, he is convinced that the world needs him and that only through his rule can order and prosperity be achieved.
Stan Lee even added that he would have liked to help rehabilitate Doom’s name. A statement that makes Doom’s position within the Marvel universe even more fascinating: an antagonist, a dictator and foe of the Fantastic Four, yet also a character convinced he is acting for a higher good.
Now, Doctor Doom Is Ready to Conquer the MCU as Well
About ten years after that encounter, those words take on an even more curious meaning. Doctor Doom is gearing up to become one of the central figures in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing to the big screen exactly that ambiguity that helped make him one of the most captivating villains in the comics.
Among all the villains he helped create, he chose precisely the one who does not consider himself such.
A man convinced he can save the world by conquering it. And now that Doom is destined to take on an increasingly prominent role in the MCU, the big question inevitably returns: Will Doctor Doom really be a villain, or, from his own perspective, could he even be right?
