Perhaps some more die-hard Star Wars fans will recall that, among the various film projects launched years ago, there was one for director Taika Waititi, who had just released Klara and the Sun, due in theaters from October 22. Waititi had already contributed to Star Wars, taking part in Lucasfilm’s television production in various forms, starting with The Mandalorian, where he portrayed the IG-11 droid (as seen in the photo above), but he had also directed an episode. Very little has been heard about his project, conceived under the aegis of former president Kathleen Kennedy. And according to statements given to Inverse, there’s a reason… quite predictable.
Star Wars, Taika Waititi’s film is unofficially canceled
The promotional run for his Klara and the Sun with Jenna Ortega prompted someone to seek out Taika Waititi for details about his rumored Star Wars film: let’s call it “rumored” because the Lucasfilm era of Kathleen Kennedy wasn’t shy about letting projects vanish, see what happened to Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, to the hyped Rian Johnson trilogy, or the other one announced in 2023, which was supposed to be led by James Mangold, Dave Filoni and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Guess what? The Waititi film also drifted into limbo: “Sorry to deliver bad news, but actually it’s been frozen, we’re working with them on something different. I can’t tell you more. I wouldn’t even know how to say more, it’s hard to be vague too. Let’s say that one is frozen. At the moment I have four other films I’m trying to make… but who knows, ice ages do end eventually.”
Do not expect a thaw in the near term: we know that Star Wars has returned to theaters with the flop of The Mandalorian & Grogu, and all eyes are on the outcome of Star Wars Starfighter by Shawn Levy with Ryan Gosling, due in cinemas in May 2027, detached from specific trilogies. Under the new leadership of Dave Filoni and Lynwenn Brennan, Lucasfilm has nevertheless begun work on yet another trilogy, this time overseen by Simon Kinberg, with the first film supposedly directed by Jon Watts. In that far, far away galaxy, Star Wars is currently navigating by sight.
