Positive surprise at the Spanish box office this weekend. Despite the end of vacation for many and the dreaded return to work, cinemas posted a higher take than in the last two weekends. 7.2 million euros in total for a box office more evenly distributed than usual, led by the debut of the Spanish animated film ‘Tadeo Jones and the Marvelous Lamp’.
Despite its modest promotion, the film manages to open with a not-insignificant 1,583,444 euros, in the 413 theaters where it was available. The figure once again places the Tadeo Jones saga as the top-grossing in Spanish animation, now in its fourth installment. One positive factor is that four years have passed since the previous movie for a character who is far from saturating like others. And we won’t point fingers.
‘Tadeo Jones 4’ was released on a Wednesday as well, so the film has already accumulated 3,029,439 euros in its first five days on the marquee. It represents the best opening for the saga and positions the film as the third Spanish film by box office this year.
Surprise, ‘The Odyssey’ tops ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Unlike other weeks, there isn’t a large leap between first and second place, and that is despite the film in second place having already spent seven weeks in theaters. We’re talking about ‘The Odyssey’, which pulls off the surprise and overtakes ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ after several weeks of leadership for the Marvel movie.
It’s by a narrow margin, and in terms of gross rather than tickets sold, which reinforces, once again, Christopher Nolan’s decision to shoot with IMAX: the film continues to enjoy strong demand in premium screenings. So much so that in the United States its run in these cinemas has been extended, where tickets are pricier.
Looking at the numbers, ‘The Odyssey’ nets 932,214 euros this weekend, while ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ takes in 928,163 euros. In the cumulative totals, the Spider-Man still leads with 37 million versus Nolan’s epic’s 35.2 million. Still, the gap is tiny, a far cry from the global box office where the superhero has grossed 2.337 billion to Nolan’s 1.447 billion.
In the department of records we love to discuss, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is already the third highest-grossing film in history, and we bet it will stay that way. The share of international box office here is already crucial, and ‘Spider-Man’ registers 61.6% compared to Avatar’s 73.1% or Endgame’s 69.3%.
Outstanding re-release of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’
The fourth position in the ranking goes to the re-release of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The 2001 film manages to gross 911,032 euros, bringing back to cinemas 122,450 spectators. Looking at the data, it’s clear that calls to boycott J.K. Rowling are having no effect on the franchise, and HBO can breathe easy ahead of the series premiere.
In fifth place, a second week for ‘Insidious: Beyond the Beyond’, which falls 46% from its opening, to gross 769,976 euros, reaching a total of 3,324,866 euros. Quite solid figures for a moderately budgeted film.
Sorogoyen surpasses himself with ‘The Beloved’
The other highlighted Spanish release of the weekend stays in sixth place with 600,378 euros. We are talking about ‘The Beloved’, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s new film, which arrived after some controversy at Cannes. On the positive side, it is the best opening for the Spanish director, surpassing the 460,000 euros earned by his previous film, the acclaimed ‘As Bestas’.
Seventh place and another new release sneaks into the list. ‘The Dog’s Constellation’ by Ridley Scott also doesn’t fully resonate in our country. Even with Jacob Elordi in the cast, the movie ends up with 555,832 euros. The film has around 20.5 million grossed worldwide on a budget of about 70 million, so we are not talking about particularly promising numbers.
Eight place goes to ‘The End of Oak Street’, which in its third week adds 187,931 euros for a total of 2.83 million euros. Another flop for Warner, which sees its summer releases fail to take off while the re-release of ‘Harry Potter’ brings in almost a million euros 25 years later.
The ninth spot in the ranking goes to Jason Statham’s ‘The Riot’. Quietly, the film has grossed 870,879 euros in two weeks.
Lastly, the ranking is closed by ‘One Night a Year’, the romantic film by Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner that does not perform in our country with 149,194 euros and barely 20,000 spectators. Considering it debuted in the United States in third place four weeks earlier than ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘The Odyssey’, we are clearly looking at results far below those achieved across the Atlantic.
