Spain’s box office kicks off September with 5.1 million euros in weekend gross, which amounts to a little over 2 million euros less than the previous week. This figure, on the other hand, is understandable when you consider there were no major premieres hitting theaters.
Thus, ‘Tadeo Jones and the Marvelous Lamp’ secures a second week at the top of the chart, taking in 976,763 euros, representing a 38% drop compared to its opening, yet fairly mild for a film of this kind. The movie now tops 5.1 million euros in gross against a budget of 12.7 million, making these results quite satisfactory for the film.
In the second and third spots, ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ stage a showdown mirroring last week’s, with both films posting nearly identical figures and suffering a 22% decline. Specifically, 728,848 euros for Nolan’s film and 720,352 euros for Marvel’s entry.
We take a moment to look at both films’ performances. For ‘Spider-Man’, the movie has already accumulated 38,490,084 euros in Spain, becoming this year’s top-grossing film in our country after surpassing the receipts of ‘Torrente Presidente’. Globally, the film has grossed about 2.409 billion dollars, making it the third-highest grossing film of all time, behind only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The film would need another roughly 390 million dollars to overtake ‘Avengers’, a challenge given that it has already spent more than 40 days in theaters across much of the world.
Regarding ‘The Odyssey’, Nolan’s most successful release, it has accumulated 36,626,984 euros in Spain, a country where the gap to Spider-Man is among the smallest, though the former has two more weeks in release. Worldwide, ‘The Odyssey’ has reached 1.639 billion dollars in box office.
Impressive second week for ‘The Loved One’
Back in Spain, the fourth spot on the box office goes to the acclaimed ‘The Loved One’, which achieves a milestone in its second week by dropping only 6% from its debut weekend. These figures are virtually identical to its opening, with 565,412 euros in gross, something few films can boast, and they echo (within the limits) the US phenomenon ‘Obsession’.
In total, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s film starring Javier Bardem manages to surpass 2 million euros in gross since its release. With these figures, it already overtakes two other of the director’s titles, ‘The Realm’ and ‘God Forgive Us’, although it still trails ‘The Beasts’.
In fifth place, and amid a dearth of premieres, Insidious: Beyond the Beyond repeats with 520,648 euros in its third week, bringing its national total to over 4.5 million euros.
Solid opening for ‘Cronos’
In sixth place on the box office, we find the week’s sole new entry into the top 10. We are talking about the Spanish film ‘Cronos’, which recreates the events surrounding the Barcelona Las Ramblas jihad attack. The film amasses a solid 491,180 euros in its opening.
The rest of the chart is filled by films in their ongoing runs, with Ridley Scott’s movie in seventh place, not surpassing 1.5 million euros in our country. Next, ‘The End of Oak Street’ adds 130,567 euros in its fourth week, for a total of 3,106,379 euros.
Closing the ranking are Jason Statham’s ‘The Riot’, with 106,555 euros in its third week for a total of 3,106,379 euros, and ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’, with 88,911 euros of its 2.6 million grossed so far.
