That Gilmore Girls Detail Rejected by Fans but Fiercely Defended by Lauren Graham

Even though Gilmore Girls remains one of the most cherished titles on the small screen, also thanks to its revival on streaming platforms, Lauren Graham is aware of a few flaws. For instance, the actress who portrays Lorelai recently confronted one of the most controversial storylines proposed over the course of the TV series, which has often drawn criticism from fans. In her view, however, the story was needed, and she justified the narrative choice in question. But what is it about?

Gilmore Girls: Lauren Graham defends the creator’s controversial plotline — “There has to be conflict”

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, Gilmore Girls accompanied the screen from 2000 to 2007 with seven seasons, returning in 2016 with a revival consisting of four episodes, each set in a specific season of the year, released for streaming on Netflix. Protagonists once again Lorelai and Rory, mother and daughter portrayed by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. Even though more than ten years have passed since the revival and almost twenty since the seventh season of Gilmore Girls, audiences continue to have questions, and Lauren Graham has reflected on one of the most debated arcs among fans.

In a recent interview with People, the actress defended a controversial arc from the sixth season that involved Lorelai and Rory: “There was that season when Rory and Lorelai argued, and I heard people say, ‘We don’t like it. It’s been going on for too long.’ But when you’re making a long-running TV series, there has to be conflict. It can’t all be a string of strolls around the gazebo. You need a bit of drama.”

At the end of season five, Rory collapses after the father of her fiancé Logan bluntly tells her she lacks the chops to become a journalist. Subsequently, Rory withdraws from Yale, but her mother doesn’t approve of that decision, having sacrificed a lot to provide her with that education. Rory, knowing she will not receive her mother’s support, moves into her grandparents’ home, Emily and Richard, shutting the door on her mother. That conflict lasted until the first half of season six, a period that some fans deemed too long.

Also in 2025, during an appearance on Call Her Daddy, Lauren Graham revisited the issue and revealed that the creator eventually chose to deepen that aspect of their relationship: “Rory and Lorelai had been fighting for a long time, and we talked about it a lot. Amy said, ‘You know, you can’t run a TV series for so long without conflicts.’ I don’t remember what the exact reason for the conflict was, but it continued for quite a while.” In any case, during today’s interview with People, Lauren Graham confessed that she “has never been that kind of actress” who pushes for changes to the screenplay’s plots: “I would never have thought I could wield that kind of influence, and I’ve always been astonished by the scripts.”
