That’s How It Went: Trailer for Gianni Zanasi’s New Film

Although his latest War wasn’t among his best works, we here continue to hold Gianni Zanasi in high regard and maintain a strong interest in his projects. For this reason, the announcement that his new film, titled That’s How It Went, would be presented at the Rome Film Festival 2026 (Grand Public section) gave us great pleasure. The movie will subsequently hit Italian theaters on November 5 with Vision Distribution, which will also oversee international distribution.
Written by Gianni Zanasi, Giacomo Ciarrapico and Michele Pellegrini, from a story by the same Zanasi, That’s How It Went tells the tale of Cecilia, a young woman who is unexpectedly forced to share a remote countryside farmhouse with the three most important men in her life. Among social workers, runaway cats, a loan shark waiting under her doorstep, and “specters” that wander about, Cecilia unexpectedly rediscovers everything she had seemed to lose: the lightness of being able to say, “That’s how it went.”
In Cecilia’s shoes we find Valentina Lodovini, while her three men are Michele Riondino, Valerio Mastandrea and Leonardo Lidi. The cast also includes Pier Luigi Pasino, Michelangelo Dalisi, Andréa Furet, Marco Fiore, Alma Teresa Giardina and Emanuele Maria Di Stefano.
