It’s not the first time that Robert Pattinson, soon to grace our screens with the true-story drama Primetime from October 15, speaks with evident enthusiasm about The Batman II by Matt Reeves, now finally getting underway for a release set in early 2028. Given that the first chapter of 2022 embraced a very noir approach, perhaps even darker than Christopher Nolan’s take, one wonders how Reeves might push the myth surrounding Bob Kane’s creation even further (all while acknowledging that the character has existed since 1939 and has already been reinterpreted in countless ways!). Pattinson, interviewed by Collider, says and does not say.

The development of The Batman II dragged on for quite a while, but Reeves’ film has outlasted Warner Bros.’ acquisition by the Discovery group, the birth of the DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and is slated to arrive in February 2028, by which time Discovery will have already sold Warner and DC to Paramount Skydance. Evidently the vision of the The Batman released in 2022 continues to win over every financier and executive, and even more so the tormented Bruce Wayne portrayed by Robert Pattinson, who says: “It’s incredibly ambitious, the first was a different take on a Batman movie, this is something else… compared to the first it’s another pivot, even if it retains elements and the flavor. […] The script is incredibly dense, you can tell Matt is one of those directors who already has everything in his head. […] There are so many things that it’s almost impossible to keep everything in mind, you keep discovering stuff and you understand where he intends to go with it.” Filming of The Batman II began this summer, with preliminary work already carried out in the spring. The cast also includes Jeffrey Wright (Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred), Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson (Harvey and Gilda Dent), Charles Dance (Charles Dent) and Colin Farrell (Cobblepot / Penguin). Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with his inseparable Mattson Tomlin. It should be noted that the film does not belong to the DC Universe continuity, but is part of the standalone line of films, the “DC Elseworlds“.
