The new feature film by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, titled The Beloved Being and starring an extraordinary Javier Bardem, has been designated the Critics’ Film by the Italian National Syndicate of Film Critics – SNCCI. Here is the reasoning:
A dizzying example of cinema within cinema, inhabited by the ghosts of past colonialism and the everyday paternalism. Sorogoyen, together with Isabel Peña, stages a writing masterpiece that speaks only of power relations, of one people over another, of a director over his actors, of a father over a daughter. Of us all.
Unjustly ignored by the jury of the last Cannes Film Festival, where, according to many, it deserved the Palme d’Or, the film is part of the program of the Rome Film Festival 2026, which placed it in the Best of 2026 section. Accompanying it to the capital was Bardem himself, who received, also at the Festival, the Career Achievement Award, which was presented to him by Paolo Sorrentino.
Set for release on November 16 through Movies Inspired, The Beloved Being tells the story of a renowned Spanish director who, after spending several years in the United States, returns home to shoot a new film. The man, who has a rather turbulent past, offers the lead role to his daughter Emilia (Victoria Luengo), who has essentially disappeared from his life since she was young. Obviously it won’t be easy for the two to learn to get along, because certain wounds take time to heal. Javier Bardem, who won the Oscar for his performance in the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men, is also the executive producer of The Beloved Being, about which we watch the trailer once again.
