The Black Ball Continues to Make History, Nearing $6 Million in Its Second Weekend

Following an excellent premiere last week, ‘La bola negra’ has achieved something that few films manage: it improves on its debut weekend in its second weekend. The film directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi increases by a full 24% in its second week, grossing nearly 6 million euros: 5.989.992€.

Since its release, the movie based on Federico García Lorca’s unfinished work has already accumulated 15.110.356 euros, thereby surpassing its budget, which hovers around 15 million euros. In total, 2.131.608 spectators have gone to cinemas to see the film, which in Spain is distributed by Elastica.

With these excellent figures, the film is on the verge of breaking into the top 10 of the Spanish films with the highest box office in history. It would need to reach the 21.4 million that ‘Agora’ achieved, currently in tenth place. It will be somewhat more difficult, though not impossible, to exceed the 28.1 million of ‘Torrente presidente’ to crown the Spanish box office’s top film of the year. For now, ‘La bola negra’ has also continued to lead the box office on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, although those figures are not yet included in the total shown here.

Both ‘Verity’ and ‘Digger’ flop in Spain

This week the much-discussed flop of Tom Cruise in ‘Digger’ makes headlines and could become one of the worst blockbuster openings in United States history. In our country this failure repeats itself, and in Spain neither does ‘Verity. The Shadow of a Deception’ stand out, which opened as the leader across the Atlantic but here barely reaches fourth place.

Thus, ‘En el corazón de la bestia’ secures in its second week a commendable second place with a solid gross of 1.055.494 euros, bringing its total to 3.17 million euros. Brad Pitt’s film has benefited from strong word-of-mouth to achieve only a minimal drop in its second week. Also performing well is ‘Resident Evil’, which after three weeks is third, adding 744.927 euros to its Spanish box office of 5.5 million euros this time.

We have to move to the fourth position on the chart to find the first weekend debut. As noted, ‘Verity. La sombra de un engaño’ opened in Spain with worse records than in the United States. Anne Hathaway’s film did not exceed 689.523 euros in its debut in our country.

In what position, the second week of ‘La isla olvidada’ posts a gentle 19% drop and 344.902 euros, bringing its total to 908.478 euros in our country.

Digger

We have to drop to sixth place to find ‘Digger’. The film that dominated headlines this weekend across the Atlantic due to its historic flop stays here with 321.422 euros on its debut. To date, ‘Digger’ has accumulated 23 million dollars worldwide on a budget of 125 million dollars, so the downturn has been substantial.

The re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ records in its second week a drop of 79%, logical given that it was a movie-event for the saga’s most devoted fans. Still, that is 317.217 euros more for a film already ultra-profitable, which has reached 2.16 million euros in ten days in our country.

Eighth place goes to the Spanish animated feature ‘Tadeo Jones y la lámpara maravillosa’, which has been in theaters for six weeks. In this latest weekend it adds 266.281 euros to a total of 7.48 million euros gross.

In ninth place, a mix of animation and live action for ‘Coyote contra Acme’, which already exceeds 1.65 million in total in our country, 268.281 euros this weekend.

Finally, the ranking excludes for the first time ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ but keeps ‘La Odisea’ in tenth place with 139.678 euros more. Its total in Spain is 38.96 million dollars.
