A weekend after the Cinema Party at the Spanish box office, the post-event hangover leaves a weak gross of €5.5 million, slightly more than one million euros less than the previous weekend. In the top 10 of the box office there are also six premieres, something rather unusual in recent years, and a healthy dose of Spanish cinema.
Nevertheless, the leadership was, for another week, and already five times running, held by ‘La bola negra’. The film by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi continues to make history and dominates the weekend with an excellent gross of €2,027,019, bringing its total to €34.3 million.
The film also, thanks to the Cinema Party, considerably raises its total audience, drawing nearly a million new viewers, bringing the cumulative total to 5.11 million viewers.
We review weekly where the film stands in the rankings. ‘La bola negra’ remains the fourth highest-grossing film in history, currently just under 2 million away from surpassing ‘Ocho apellidos catalanes’ and breaking into the top 3.
As for the audience, there is a substantial shift, and in one week it rises from 12th to 7th in the historical ranking of most-watched films. Thus, the movie is already very close to continuing its ascent, since it is only 200,000 viewers away from overtaking the sixth film, ‘Torrente 2: Misión en Marbella’, something that is expected to happen this very week.
Weak debut for ‘Clayface’ in Spain
The second spot goes to what was, theoretically, the week’s big premiere. The film ‘Clayface’ opens in our country with only a quarter of the leader’s gross, taking in just €499,953 and drawing a little over 100,000 spectators. Those figures are quite a bit worse than what the film achieves in the United States, where it at least led the box office on its opening weekend.
The third place in the Spanish box office goes to ‘En el corazón de la bestia’, which we can say without a doubt has been one of the year’s surprises: a weak start but solid staying power, which in its fifth week brings in €386,233 to its total of €6.5 million.
Solid debut for Spanish animation ‘Superthings’
The next four films in the rankings were all debuts. The first among them, at fourth place, is the Spanish animated film ‘Superthings: la película’. It is unusual to see a Spanish film of this kind beyond the Tadeo Jones saga, so we can say that the €278,180 collected by the film is more than respectable.

Sixth position for another Spanish film, the third in the top 10, and it won’t be the last. The film ‘Leones en invierno’ starring Luis Zahera debuts with €275,278, very close to ‘Sentido y sensibilidad’.
Below, the debut of the acclaimed ‘Wildwood: The Wild Forest’ sits at €257,050. These figures are not enough for a film boasting a budget around $100 million.
After ‘La otra madre’ in eighth place (€246,907), we find the last new entry in the top 10 and one more Spanish film. It is José Mota’s directorial debut, ‘Arriba Tutto’. The film opens with €187,494 at the box office, which remains slightly above average for a Spanish film.
The ranking closes with the second week of ‘La invitación’ with €172,154, bringing its total to €841,674.
