Karl Urban has portrayed one of the most controversial characters in The Boys, TV Series distributed for five seasons on Prime Video, and which has launched a television universe where superheroes are, in fact, the villains to stop, led by Patriot. As the leader of the Seven and at the helm of Vought, Patriot has given the Boys a hard time, but the latter has carried on a more personal battle, given that Patriot abused his wife and fathered a son with her, Ryan. It is therefore not surprising that the fifth season offered Butcher the chance to realize his wish; however, the ending assigned to his character was not exactly a happy ending, but rather the closing of a circle, as Urban himself explained.
The Boys 5, Karl Urban’s reaction to Butcher’s fate in the final episode
The Boys universe had been terrorized for a long time by Patriot, but his death came at the hands of Butcher. With the help of his Boys, Butcher ended the life of the Vought tyrant, yet he later pressed on with his crusade. Determined to free the world from the Supes, he threatened to unleash a virus, dooming everyone to death, including himself, but was stopped by Hughie, who, under pressure, had to decide: Butcher or the rest of the Supers (including Annie).
In an interview with Collider, Karl Urban reflected on the fate awaiting his character and conceded that it may have been one of his favorite scenes across the entire series because it signified the closing of a circle: “Speaking with Butcher, I thought that [his ending] was faithful to what is told in the graphic novels. Personally, I appreciated the intrinsic tragedy of what happened to Butcher and the whole situation with Hughie. Without revealing too much, there is that mechanism that Butcher had put in place over the years: Hughie was there to prevent him from losing control. When that moment arrives, it lands, but Hughie doesn’t realize it. For me, it was a scene really well written. It’s one of my favorite scenes of the entire series.”
Given the definitive end of Butcher, it seems unlikely that the character will reappear in the The Boys universe. The next project on the horizon is Vought Rising, but as a prequel focusing on the origins of Soldier Boy and Stormfront, it is unlikely to reference Butcher. The future of this television universe remains unclear, but his death makes a comeback in any sequel a difficult, if not impossible, proposition.
