The Camera Lucida: Filming Begins on Lorenzo Tardella’s Film with Filippo Scotti, Elena Lietti, and Paolo Briguglia

About two weeks into the production of La camera lucida, the first feature film by Lorenzo Tardella, produced by Rosamont and the French In Vivo Films, in collaboration with Rai Cinema and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Lazio Region. Although he has never signed a feature-length project, the director has gained international recognition thanks to the short Le variabili dipendenti, which was presented at the Berlin Film Festival and won a David di Donatello. In that film, as in this one, the in-between stage between childhood and adolescence is explored. Moreover, the coming-of-age narrative blends with a family story.

In La camera lucida, the cast includes Elena Lietti, Filippo Scotti, Paolo Briguglia and the very young Francesco Cozza and Javier Leoni. Filming is taking place in the Lazio region and will last about five weeks. About this new venture, Lorenzo Tardella wanted to say:

It is a huge joy to begin the shoots on my first film, La camera lucida. It is a story that has accompanied me for many years, which has formed almost unconsciously through a series of short films and which now finally finds the space and the breath it deserves. Elena Lietti and Filippo Scotti were in my head from the very first drafts of the screenplay: they are two actors of extraordinary talent, and I hope to view them with a perspective different from the others who, before me, placed them at the center of their stories. And I am equally happy that the long casting process has allowed me to discover the two very young Francesco Cozza and Javier Leoni, whom I never tire of watching throughout all these months of rehearsals.

La camera lucida marks the debut of five other department heads. The cinematography is by Simone Rossi, the costumes by Rebecca Valloggia, the editing by Angela Norelli, the makeup and hair by David Santangelo and Sofia Di Stefano. About 20 crew members under 35 were finally involved. Returning to the cast, Filippo Scotti suddenly became famous thanks to Paolo Sorrentino, who cast him as the lead in the autobiographical È stata la mano di Dio. Subsequently, we saw him in Io e Spotty by Cosimo Gomez, L’orto americano by Pupi Avati, and Le città di pianura by Francesco Sossai. As for Elena Lietti, she was recently seen in the series by Daniele Luchetti Prima di noi. Her résumé also includes Tre Piani by Nanni Moretti, Il grande giorno by Massimo Venier, Le otto montagne by Felix Van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, and the series by Davide Marengo Rosa Elettrica. The career of Paolo Briguglia is even longer, having first appeared in Il manoscritto del principe and later admired in I cento Passi by Marco Tullio Giordana, El Alamein by Enzo Monteleone, La Terra by Sergio Rubini, Non pensarci by Gianni Zanasi, and Il maestro by Andrea Di Stefano.
