Not a strong weekend at the United States box office. With a total of around 84.4 million euros, this marks what would be the sixth-worst weekend of the year in terms of gross. The reason is simply the weak performance of this week’s releases, coupled with last week’s stumble of ‘Digger’, leaving the box office result rather skeletal.
One of the surprises, though, was the top spot taken by ‘The Other Mother’ with 27.5 million dollars. Jessica Chastain’s film seems to have conquered the box office almost by default, surpassing the 20 million in revenue Universal had forecast. While not spectacular numbers, they are surprising given that the film had been pummeled by both audiences and critics alike.
With a D+ on CinemaScore, it is the worst result since Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ in 2024. And we couldn’t even start with the professional critics, because the reviews are dire. Still, the horror movie craze and the approach of Halloween, without a stronger title, seems to have been enough to convince the genre’s most movie-loving audiences to head to theaters.
The weekend’s second place goes to ‘Verity. The Shadow of a Deception’. The Anne Hathaway film drops 64.2%, but manages an acceptable 11.4 million, enough to finish second with weak competition. The film has already accumulated 53.8 million in the United States and 114 worldwide, which for a budget of around 40 million isn’t bad either.
Already in its fourth week at the box office, ‘Resident Evil’ holds on to the top 3 with 8.35 million more. The horror movie has grossed 320 million worldwide, so Sony can be more than satisfied with the reboot of the franchise, which seems to have found the direction it failed to achieve with Milla Jovovich.
Another movie that has benefited from word of mouth is ‘In the Heart of the Beast’, which lands fourth in its third week, adding 7.1 million to a US total hovering near 50 million dollars.
The Price of the Network Flops on Its Debut
Poor news also for Aaron Sorkin with his pseudo-sequel to ‘The Social Network’. The film ‘The Price of the Network’ opens in the United States with only $5.5 million at fifth place in the rankings. Pathetic figures for an audience seemingly saturated with the scandals surrounding big tech and their leaders.
The Remake of ‘The Angel and the Gunman’ Also Flops
