The Empress Season 3: Sissi Faces an Impossible Choice in the Official Trailer for the Final Season

The moment of farewell has arrived. Netflix has released the trailer for the third and final season of The Empress, the period drama focused on the life of Elisabeth of Austria, portrayed by Devrim Lingnau. The new episodes will premiere on the platform on November 12, 2026, and will bring to a close the story of Sissi and her troubled marriage to Emperor Franz.

The Empress 3: The Plot of the Final Season

After the wars, the tensions at court, and the painful trials faced in the first two seasons, Elisabeth finds herself facing a new crisis. Franz returns from the conflict deeply scarred, their relationship is increasingly fragile, and the young empress’s health worsens. When Sissi decides to distance herself from Vienna, however, her journey leads her to an encounter destined to change her life forever. The third season resumes from the consequences of the Sardinian War. Franz, portrayed by Philip Froissant, returns home after witnessing thousands of young men die on the battlefield. The weight of the losses and the guilt make him a different man, while Elisabeth tries in vain to help him and save their marriage. The situation further escalates when Franz becomes involved in an extramarital relationship. The betrayal definitively tests the bond between the two, just as Sissi must also contend with court pressures and with a health that grows increasingly fragile. Far from Vienna, Elisabeth meets Count Andrássy, leader of the Hungarian revolution played by Dejan Bućin. Between them there immediately arises a strong attraction, both physical and intellectual. For Sissi, a completely new possibility thus opens up. On the one hand, there is the life she has always sought to build as empress; on the other, the possibility of finally following her own feelings.

A New Chapter for the Imperial Family

The story will not remain confined to the Viennese court. Parallel to Elisabeth and Franz’s arc, the season will also follow Maximilian, the emperor’s brother, and his wife Marie. The two will depart for Mexico, where Maximilian is destined to undertake a new and ambitious venture tied to the imperial throne. The series will thus move across different settings, expanding the political and international dimension of the narrative.

The Success of The Empress

The Empress has become one of Netflix’s most acclaimed non-English-language drama series, also winning the International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series in 2023. The third season will consist of six episodes and will once again involve Katharina Eyssen as showrunner, with Robert Eyssen taking on creative responsibility. Florian Cossen and Julia Langhof return as directors. Filming took place in Bavaria, the Czech Republic, and Spain.
