To win the collateral prize Bookciak al miglior film da opera letteraria at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival was The Fire You Carry Inside by Edoardo De Angelis, adapted from the eponymous novel by Antonio Franchini. A jury composed of Steve Della Casa (film critic, longtime voice of Hollywood Party and Curator of the National Film Archive), Camillo De Marco (film critic for Cineuropa), Teresa Marchesi (film critic for Domani), Flavio Natalia (director of Sala Grande) and Barbara Sorrentini (Radio Popolare) determined the winner. The director of Indivisibili and Comandante H received the recognition “for his original adaptation that, thanks to the screenplay work by the director himself, by Ilaria Macchia and by Francesco Piccolo, can move away from the written page, remaining faithful to the power of its characters and the story. By centering the entire action on Franchini’s Christmas at home, the film intensifies the noir and grotesque of the tale. Bestowing upon cinema the memorable figure of this mother-tyrant, illuminated by a magnificent and exuberant Vanessa Scalera.”
The Fire You Carry Inside is the sixth film by Edoardo De Angelis, who also presented at the Venice Festival Perez., Indivisibili and Comandante. The director has assembled in the cast, beside Vanessa Scalera, the superb Lino Musella, Ivana Lotito, Elena Radonicich and Tommaso Ragno. Like the book on which it is based, the film is a powerful and at times ruthless portrait of the protagonist’s mother, who arrives suddenly at her son’s home on Christmas Eve, imposing her rules and her demands.
