There had already been substantial chatter about ‘Artificial’ when Amazon MGM Studios decided to drop the film after investing $50 million in ChatGPT. Now, after Neon has acquired the rights to the movie in the United States, we can see the first images from the teaser trailer that have just been released. And we are left speechless.
The movie, although framed as a biopic of ChatGPT founder Sam Altman, focuses mainly on the five days during which he was dismissed as CEO of his company before being rehired.
The teaser shows Andrew Garfield as Altman arriving at what appears to be the mansion where he works. The house seems inhabited by a string of handsome and burly men strolling around in underwear, until Altman descends the stairs into some kind of bunker where there is a room full of weapon racks.
Little, if any, mention of the Artificial Intelligence that is presumed to drive the story, beyond the grandiose voiceover. And Garfield has admitted that he knew nothing about Altman before he began preparing for the film, which also features a high-caliber cast including Monica Barbaro, Mark Rylance, Cooper Koch, and Billie Lourd, among others.
The Initial Reaction
The first to share his opinion on the trailer was Jack Altman, Sam’s own brother. In a brief post on X, Jack claimed that “you all know there’s nothing I love more than a movie making fun of my brother. Unfortunately, based on the trailer, it seems that the only thing they’ve nailed is the way he walks.”
A reaction meant to downplay a matter that has Silicon Valley on edge, fearing that the film could, if anything, further damage the image of the big tech companies, already regarded as the country’s top problem.
‘Artificial’ will premiere on October 5 at the New York Film Festival, and Christmas Day it will arrive in U.S. theaters.
