The Incredible True Story Behind the Proposal in Nobody Wants This 3

The third season of Nobody Wants This has offered a lot to its two leads. Noah and Joanne met at a delicate and opportune moment in their lives and decided to spend the rest of it together. It wasn’t easy, considering that Noah is a rabbi and Joanne is not Jewish, but together they found common ground and continued along the same path. Over the course of the third season, their story advances rapidly, reaching milestone after milestone, including a marriage proposal. But how did it come about? The inspiration behind that pivotal moment was explained by the creator Erin Foster.

Nobody Wants This 3, Erin Foster explains that the idea for Noah and Joanne’s marriage proposal is drawn from a real story

The marriage proposal from Noah to Joanne sprang from a major decoy that even misled the audience. After only a few episodes into the season, Noah asks Joanne to accompany him to Napa to attend a friend’s wedding, and she agrees, thinking of the fabulous weekend away from everything and everyone they would spend together. On the day of departure, however, nothing goes as planned.

Behind the choice of the proposal lies a real-life story that personally concerns Erin Foster, the creator, who for the occasion even granted herself a cameo in the episode in question. “We wanted this couple to move forward together with momentum and to experience all those grand romantic moments people want to see, but to find a way to make it feel new, real, and full of surprises,” she told Tudum. But how did it pan out in reality? “I thought I was going to the vow renewal of someone else’s couple, and it wasn’t that. I was heading to my own marriage proposal.”

Joanne finds herself in a particularly fragile professional moment: she believes that, now that she’s happy, her audience isn’t as interested in her anymore, and that’s why, when she meets a fan in the airport who’s so thrilled to see her, she decides to help her. Nicole, played by Erin Foster, explains to Joanne that she doesn’t have the Napa ticket but would love to reach her great love and confess her feelings. A gesture so romantic that Joanne, on the spot, decides to give her her own ticket. Noah, overwhelmed, dives into an almost impossible mission precisely because Joanne doesn’t realize she must be with him in Napa for what will be his marriage proposal.

Fortunately, Joanne regains her senses when she discovers that Nicole planned to confess eternal love to her sister’s husband, and she retrieves the ticket. Once they reach their destination, both exhausted from the journey and with far from glamorous looks for the occasion, Noah drops to one knee and asks her to marry him in the middle of the vineyard. Erin Foster’s experience was a little different: “In my case, when we arrived at the hotel, the reception asked us: ‘Oh, are you here for Carolyn and Chief’s vow renewal?’ They had a script. They even handed me a packet with the rehearsal times; it all felt so real.”

One might have read it in her wine of choice, or in the tulip-flanked decorations, or perhaps in Taylor Swift’s song Lover; in any case, Joanne didn’t take long to connect the dots once she saw Noah kneeling. Erin Foster recalled when her own husband knelt to ask for her hand: “As soon as he knelt, I screamed, ‘Are you crazy? We’re literally at someone else’s vow renewal.’ And he replied, ‘No, it’s not true. It’s all fake, it was a lie.’ It felt like I was the victim of a televised prank.” What made it even more special was the involvement of their respective siblings: Joanne asked Noah to let her call her sister Morgan to share the big news, but it wasn’t necessary because Morgan and Sasha were nearby, both in on it. In any case, Erin Foster shared her story on Instagram:
