The filming has begun in Trieste for The Lüneburg Variation, the new film written and directed by Oscar-winning Gabriele Salvatores, a noir set in the chess world drawn from the eponymous Paolo Maurensig novel published by Adelphi. In addition to Trieste, shooting will also take place in Rome and will last nine weeks. In the film’s principal cast we will find Toni Servillo, Sebastian Koch, Damian Hardung, Eduardo Scarpetta, and Thomas Prenn.
“The story of a duel that lasts more than forty years and that the two opponents fight on the battlefield of a chessboard. Chess! The most violent sport that exists and, perhaps, the least cinematic. A beautiful challenge that I enjoyed taking on. The violent, magical, esoteric and mysterious dimension of chess, that is truly cinematic! Maurensig dreamed of a film of shadows, of darkness and fire, gripping and cruel. I hope to be able to satisfy him…”, as stated by director Gabriele Salvatores regarding his new film.
Produced by Raffaella Leone and Andrea Leone, The Lüneburg Variation is a Lotus Production creation for Leone Film Group, with Rai Cinema, in association with Vice Pictures, in association with Indiana Production, a Vuelta company, in association with MDE.
