The Passion of Christ: Resurrection is already shaping up to be a narrative that will not limit itself to the Gospels alone, or so the director Mel Gibson promises, in an interview with The Christian Post, as the first installment of his religious epic is slated to hit cinemas in spring 2027. If the previous film already presented visionary detours that one wouldn’t expect from a more conventional adaptation, Resurrection aims even higher in this regard, naturally while remaining faithful to the subject matter.

Undoubtedly, The Passion of Christ: Resurrection will not be a synoptic Gospel, meaning it will not offer a sequence of well-known pivotal episodes common to the Gospels of Mark, Luke, and Matthew. Mel Gibson explains: “The Synoptic Gospels don’t tell you everything. Even John says: ‘There were many other things Jesus said and did, and they would fill all the libraries of the world‘, you see? There is a lot of material that wasn’t written, and the Scriptures are synoptic. […] One can examine an episode and wonder: what happened before and after? One can attempt to analyze those elements, and ask what might have occurred next. This is not to contradict traditional teachings, but to amplify, perhaps some revelations will be shocking. […] There is crazy stuff. I think to tell the story properly you really must begin with the fall of the angels, which means we will find ourselves in another place, another realm. We must descend into Hell. You must go to Sheol [the realm of the dead in the Old Testament, editor’s note]. […] I mean, we will be in the firmament, even before creation. You will be in the realm of the righteous in Hell, then in that of the damned. We’ll skip around a bit here and there, we won’t stay on Earth. We will be roaming about.
The first part of The Passion of Christ: Resurrection is scheduled for release in May 2027, while the second installment will arrive in theaters the following year. Gibson directs from a script he co-wrote with Randall Wallace, with Jaakko Ohtonen portraying Jesus. The rest of the film’s cast, shot largely on location in Italy, includes Kasia Smutniak (Mary), Riccardo Scamarcio (Pontius Pilate), Rupert Everett, Sara Serraiocco, Eduardo Scarpetta, just to name a portion of the international ensemble.
