Even before catching the streaming audience’s attention with the latest Furious, distributed on Disney+, Emmy Rossum drew attention by portraying Fiona in Shameless. The eldest daughter of a rather dysfunctional and large family, Fiona had to look after her younger siblings because of her troubled parents. Although her character may be the most famous to date, Fiona posed a tough test for the actress, especially on the personal and romantic front. It was Emmy Rossum herself who spoke more about it.
How Shameless and Fiona Gallagher Drastically Influenced Emmy Rossum’s Romantic Life
Despite having played Fiona Gallagher for years, Emmy Rossum is certain she isn’t like her, though some people have forgotten this aspect by conflating the two realities. In a recent interview with Pretty Tough, the actress spoke about how her love life was influenced by Shameless, by Fiona, and by the nude scenes she shot for the TV series in question. During the interview, she recalled her nine-season experience out of twelve on Shameless and how the nude scenes made it difficult to find a partner in real life: “The situation became quite complicated because of the nudity present in the TV series. All the guys I dated had preconceived notions about who I was or about how I was sexually speaking.”
According to the actress, that was a “bizarre” experience, and she added how surprised she was when she realized not everyone could separate fiction from reality. She cited the example of an ambitious politician who then expressed concerns about how her work might reflect on her as a person: “He told me: ‘I would love to become president someday.’ I thought it was a fantastic goal, but then he continued, ‘I think running for public office and dating someone who has been exposed to the public as you could make my life complicated.’ I thought it was an absurd conversation.”
When Shameless, the American remake, reached TV screens, Emmy Rossum was 24 years old, and playing Fiona had a considerable impact on her love life at the time: “You’re trying to figure out who you are, you’re finding your artistic identity, and there are all these preconceptions about you out there, tied to you because your body is your art, right? People can get confused.” That interlude is now behind us. Today the actress is married to Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot. The couple, married in 2017, have two children. Even before that, the actress was involved with Justin Siegel.
