The Rookie, the police procedural series starring Nathan Fillion, returns with new cases, threats, and significant changes for the officers of the Los Angeles Police Department. The first two episodes of the season 8, scheduled for prime-time on Sunday, October 4 on Rai2, will immediately plunge the protagonists into the heart of two particularly delicate situations: on one side an international operation against a weapons trafficker, and on the other the visit of the President of the United States to Los Angeles. Here are all the previews and what to expect in this season.
The Rookie 8: Episode plots for the October 4 broadcast
Episodio 8×01 – Spionaggio a Praga
Following the events of the season seven finale, Monica Stevens has secured immunity and decides to cooperate with the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI to help capture some of the most dangerous criminals still at large. Among them is Lucas Wegner, involved in an international weapons trafficking operation. The criminal is expected in Prague, and the operation takes Nolan and Bailey away from Los Angeles. The LAPD, FBI, and Interpol join forces to stop Wegner and to disrupt a criminal network active in the United States and abroad.
Episodio 8×02 – Cambiamenti
In the second episode, Tim takes on the role of captain in place of Grey and is immediately faced with a particularly delicate situation. The President of the United States is due to arrive in Los Angeles, and the LAPD must collaborate with the Secret Service to guarantee his safety. Lucy coordinates the intricate security apparatus, while Nyla and Angela are busy tracking down a dangerous man who has sent threatening letters to the President. Meanwhile, Miles must test his instincts as Tim confronts the first difficulties tied to his new assignment.
The Rookie 8, what will happen to Nolan and the other main characters
The new season won’t be only a succession of cases to solve. Following what happened in the previous cycle, there will also be room for the characters’ personal relationships. Nolan and Bailey will have to reckon with Monica’s presence and with the need to work alongside a woman they do not trust. Their trip to Prague will thus serve as a test both professionally and personally. For Tim and Lucy, the situation remains complex. Tim feels ready to take a step forward in their relationship and to begin cohabitation, but Lucy hasn’t forgotten the pain he caused her. In the meantime, Nyla and Angela will face new threats, while changes within the LAPD will bring about new balances and responsibilities.
The Rookie expands with the spin-off The Rookie: North
The world of The Rookie, furthermore, is set to widen with The Rookie: North, the new spin-off ordered by ABC. It will be the second spin-off of the franchise after the brief experience of The Rookie: Feds, and the first season will consist of 10 episodes. Created by Alexi Hawley, the mind behind the original series, The Rookie: North will feature Jay Ellis in the lead role as Alex Holland. The character is a middle-aged man who, after a violent home invasion, decides to change his life and join the Pierce County Police Department in Washington State. Alex thus becomes the oldest recruit in the department and will have to prove he can handle the new assignment in a territory that includes both urban areas and forested zones. The new series is expected in the United States, on ABC, in January 2027, so seeing it in Italy will require a further wait.
For now, it’s wise to focus on the eighth season of The Rookie, airing every Sunday on Rai 2 with new episodes (plus one in rerun).
