The treasures of America are about to be rediscovered. Back in the 2000s, ‘National Treasure’ struck a chord at the cinema, and its sequel left us eager to see more adventures of this kind from Nicolas Cage. Two decades have passed since the end of those stories, but its director hasn’t forgotten them and has been preparing his return. Now he’s convinced: ‘National Treasure 3’ is on the way.
He isn’t basing it on anything to say so. There is a completed script, and he himself says that nothing in Hollywood could stop the plan. Not even if something happened to him would halt what he’s set in motion: he says it’s Hollywood-level real, and that means things are serious. Although he admits one scenario in which there would be no film: If Nicolas Cage gets run over by a bus there is no ‘National Treasure 3’. Strangely specific, but we’ll keep that in mind.
Thrilled About the Script
The news was announced by Jon Turteltaub, producer of the original films, via the National Treasure Hunt fan-club podcast. In the Friday episode, August 21, 2026, he appeared to share the exclusive with great excitement. “It’s happening. You’re the first to hear it aloud. I hadn’t said anything until now, but you deserve to be the first to know: it’s finally real. Now it’s real at the Hollywood level, which means that things can happen.”
The cheer lasts throughout his visit, and he ends up providing more details. He states that the script is one that he personally truly likes, and beyond that, that Disney has given its approval to move the film forward with him. Those are weighty words indeed if the studio greenlights it, and it will simply be a matter of time to see how far the project goes.
Treasure Hunting Is Back
The National Treasure franchise was a box-office hit when it debuted two decades ago, but since then Disney hasn’t extracted much from the name. They tried to give it new life a few years ago with a Disney+ series, ‘National Treasure: Beyond the Story’, but it was canceled after a single season. Perhaps because it lacked the magic touch that Nicolas Cage brings to his projects: it’s hard to imagine the saga without him.
