From Friday the 13th onward, up to the recent titles In a Violent Nature and Camp Miasma, the slasher has always felt very at home in natural settings, among the woods and near lakes and bodies of water. Or along rivers, as in the case of a brand-new film titled — precisely — River that we will see in theaters soon, the directorial debut of screenwriter and director Joshua Giuliano, premiered with strong reception in Midnight Madness, the genre section of the Toronto International Film Festival, River features Jane Levy (the one from Don’t Breathe and The House by Fede Álvarez) and Jessica Rothe (the star of Happy Death Day), joined by Max Mattern: they portray three siblings who have been estranged for years and reunite for the first time in the rural town where they were born after their father’s death. Determined to scatter their father’s ashes in his preferred spot, along a river that winds through the woods, the trio’s journey into nature becomes the usual survival struggle when they realize they are being hunted by an implacable and unsettling masked figure.
Born in an independent setting (but among the producers are also Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund, the Cape Fear TV series people), the film was acquired by Universal and Blumhouse after its successful Toronto run. In the United States it will debut in theaters on January 15, 2027, and it is reasonable to expect a release date in our country as well.
Meanwhile, here is the first official trailer for River.
