The Story Is Truly Infinite: The Classic 1980s Fantasy Film Returns to Theaters

The NeverEnding Story is truly a myth: beyond the appeal of a handcrafted and analog blockbuster from the eighties, which in itself exudes a vintage charm, the memories of many people are awakened by the “The NeverEnding Story” by Giorgio Moroder, one of the most iconic and symbolic pieces of the decade. This legend, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Ende, returns to the cinema, thanks to Adler Entertainment, in a special event release on the 16-17-18 November in a remastered version, to be enjoyed as more than forty years ago. A special occasion for those who grew up with Stranger Things and want to go back to the roots of that spirit.

The NeverEnding Story back in cinemas on November 16, in a remastered version

The NeverEnding Story (1984) by the late Wolfgang Petersen, adapted from the 1979 novel by Michael Ende, returns to theaters on the 16-17-18 November in a remastered version: not restored, but who knows if we would really want that, because we wouldn’t want to lose the chemical-analog flavor of the then notable special effects, etched into the collective imagination as they were. Indelible in this regard are the scenes where the protagonists ride the dragon Falkor, a colossal animatronic actually on set, as was the practice before the advent of CGI. It cost at the time about $25 million dollars, indeed 60 million marks (it was a German production conceived with an international outlook), and grossed worldwide around $100,000,000, proving to be a great success, immediately well received by boys and girls who saw themselves in the young protagonists.
The film tells the story of Bastian (Barret Oliver), a bullied child who in an antiquarian bookstore discovers a mysterious book that transports him to the world of Fantasia, threatened by the ominous force of the Nothing. Following the adventures of the brave young warrior Atreyu (Noah Hathaway), in search of a cure for the Childlike Empress (Tami Stone), Bastian finds himself increasingly drawn into what he reads. Is there really a barrier between him and the book’s pages, where he reads about Falkor, the horse Artax and the wolf Gmork?
The aforementioned track “The NeverEnding Story“, written by Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey, performed by Limahl, was not present in the film’s original German edition, but it indelibly shaped its international diffusion. It was sung by Limahl in the third season of Stranger Things.
The film spawned two sequels, The NeverEnding Story 2 (1990) by George Trumbull Miller, and The NeverEnding Story 3 (1994) by Peter MacDonald, which were already out of date.
Here is the poster for the re-release of The NeverEnding Story.
