The Wachowski sisters have already revolutionized the world of cinema once, and if given the chance, they would do it again. Lilly Wachowski has had the opportunity to speak about her future in film on a recent podcast and revealed her plan for her next work, though she is running into some obstacles to making it a reality: a feature-length film with absolute transgender representation.
From what Wachowski tells her interviewers, the movie would be titled ‘The Hunted’ (‘The Prey’) and would depict a dystopia in which transgender people are hunted and eliminated from society. Lilly doesn’t shy away from political commentary in her works, and to make such a project possible she would need a fully transgender cast that properly represents the community. It’s a good idea on the table, but as the director claims, nobody in Hollywood wants to do something like this.
Hollywood Refuses
Although she is encountering difficulties financing the film, Wachowski is determined to bring it to life by giving the concept a few twists. “People like it, but the truth is that they don’t want to produce it because the cast is made up entirely of transgender people. I have to be creative and find different ways to get this to the audience,” she explained on the podcast.
“This is a script that for me has been very important to write,” continued Lilly, who proceeds to explain why it is vital that the work sees the light of day. “It is a response to what is happening in the world with transgender people, and it has served as a release valve for me to vent all my anger, my rage and my frustration.” Wachowski lays out the problems faced by people like her and her sister, who are not accepted in society and are often a political target far too often.
Unrestricted Art
Lilly Wachowski seeks funding for her new film studio, Anarchists United, which she hopes will grant her greater freedom to express herself in cinema. Both she and her sister Lana Wachowski have been openly vocal on political issues in their previous works, with notable readings in films such as ‘V for Vendetta’ and ‘Cloud Atlas’.
