After eight episodes, the third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City has come to a close (in Italy on Sky and streaming only on NOW). Will we see Maggie and Negan again? For now, things are very uncertain, since the American network AMC has not yet officially announced either a renewal or a cancellation of the series. What does that mean? Is the last episode of the third season, which could have a finale feel, truly the conclusive end of the spin-off? On the one hand, the events of the latest season seem to have pushed Maggie and Negan toward a natural stopping point. On the other hand, the finale introduces elements that could easily become the starting point for a new story. Let’s analyze the situation and understand everything that is known.
The Walking Dead: Dead City: Does the third-season finale close Maggie and Negan’s story?
After three seasons largely set in Manhattan, Maggie and Negan eventually reach a new form of balance. Their relationship, born from one of the saga’s most painful tragedies, undergoes a profound transformation. Maggie does not forget what Negan did to Glenn and does not fully forgive him, but she nonetheless comes to regard him as one of the closest people still by her side in New York. In the finale, Maggie even tells him that he is family now. The season has focused on exploring the possibility of overcoming, at least in part, the conflict that defined their relationship for years. Maggie also begins to reclaim her life: the presence of Luis introduces the possibility of a new romantic interest and, in the finale, the protagonist removes her wedding ring. It is a symbolic gesture suggesting that Maggie might finally be ready to look beyond the trauma of Glenn’s death, without forgetting him.
Even the story of Dillard, portrayed by Jimmi Simpson, reaches its conclusion. After gradually losing control, he is killed by Maggie and, at Negan’s request, is allowed to transform. The last image of the character, walking among the walkers through New York, represents a particularly meaningful ending to his arc. All of these elements contribute to the sense that the third season could function as a finale for the series.
The alternate-universe episode and Maggie and Negan’s future
Among the season’s most surprising elements is the episode set in an alternate reality, in which Negan pictures a world without walkers in which he and Maggie can meet under completely different circumstances. The episode, which also features the return of Emily Kinney as Beth, allows an exploration of a relationship between the two characters free from the weight of Glenn’s death and the apocalypse. The meaning of this experiment becomes even clearer in light of the finale: Maggie and Negan are no longer simply two enemies forced to work together. They have become a kind of family, while still retaining all the contradictions of their past.
Why is Season 4 still a possibility?
But just as their relationship seems to have found a conclusion, the series throws one last twist. At the end of the season, Maggie entrusts Negan with a secret mission. The audience doesn’t learn exactly what she intends to do, but the detail could become crucial if AMC decides to continue the series. Lauren Cohan, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, kept the mystery when asked whether she knows the future of the mission. The actress did not confirm anything, but her words hinted that there is still something that cannot be revealed. This isn’t, of course, a confirmation of Dead City 4. It is nonetheless a narrative element that allows the series to keep a door open. Jeffrey Dean Morgan also seems interested in continuing to explore Negan. The actor explained that the third season allowed him to discover new facets of the character and to work with Lauren Cohan on situations never tackled before.
The renewal announcement could come soon. Perhaps AMC is waiting for the New York Comic-Con scheduled for October. Even if Dead City does not have a specific panel planned, there will be one dedicated to Daryl Dixon, the other The Walking Dead spin-off currently on air. On that occasion Scott Gimple, the franchise’s content boss, could unveil the mystery. It’s worth noting that the possible cancellation of The Walking Dead: Dead City would spell the end of the franchise after the fourth season of Daryl Dixon arrives in 2027. And it would be very strange to close things with such a subdued finale.
