Perhaps not everyone knows that the talk show hosted by Jennifer Hudson and titled The Jennifer Hudson Show is preceded by a playful ritual called Spirit Tunnel. Before the program begins, the staff welcomes the guest of the moment in the corridor that leads to the studio. It is a very warm reception, because those present sing a song related to the guest, who usually joins in by singing and dancing. We’re sharing all this because the tradition was honored by Tom Cruise, who chose The Jennifer Hudson Show as the final stop of the promotional tour for Digger, the Alejandro González Iñárritu film in which he stars.
Obviously the Hudson ensured Cruise’s appearance was secured well in advance. Since the star is a big fan of late-night shows, he immediately agreed, and thus he walked out of the dressing room to discover with amusement that the selected song was the evergreen Old Time Rock & Roll, which recalls a scene from Risky Business – Fuori i vecchi… i figli ballano, or rather a very young Tom Cruise, in underwear, shirt, and socks, dancing to the notes of the hit by Tom Seger. The show’s staff greeted the actor by wearing sunglasses like the ones his character wore in the film. He lent him his own and joined in the fun. The lyrics of the song were altered and the mood was joyful, as is clear from a video of the fateful Spirit Tunnel.
