Even though he still looks like a kid and has the energy, audacity, and recklessness of youth, Tom Cruise already has a long career behind him and is 64 years old, so it is not surprising that the American Film Institute has decided to honor him with the fifty-second AFI Life Achievement Award. The American Film Institute announced it today, recognizing in the trophy “the greatest honor for a cinematic career.” The award will be presented to the actor at a ceremony (Gala Tribute) that will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 24, 2027.
“Tom Cruise is a global icon” – Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board, said. “As an actor and producer, he brings extraordinary dedication to everything he does. What I particularly admire is his deep faith in cinema and in its ability to bring people together. This passion has made him an outstanding ambassador for American cinema around the world. It is an honor for the AFI to confer upon him the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award.”
Tom Cruise has been nominated for an Oscar as an actor three times (for Bborn on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia) and one as a producer (for Top Gun: Maverick). He has also received the Academy Honorary Award, which he personally accepted in November 2025 during the Governors Awards ceremony. Collectively, his films have grossed more than $13 billion worldwide.
At the moment Tom is in our cinemas in the controversial Digger by Alejandro González Iñárritu, a satire on the economic and political power that, if misused, seriously risks leading us all toward catastrophe. Among Cruise’s future projects is the sequel to Days of Thunder, where he will reprise the role of Cole Trickle.
Many of Hollywood’s greats have been honored, in a more or less recent past, with the AFI Life Achievement Award. Among them are Eddie Murphy, Francis Ford Coppola, Nicole Kidman, Julie Andrews, Denzel Washington, George Clooney and Diane Keaton. The first edition of the trophy dates back to 1973, when the honor went to the great director John Ford.
