Scherzetto, the eagerly awaited new film by Mario Martone will be unveiled out of competition on September 10 at the Venice Film Festival.
Adapted from the eponymous novel by Domenico Starnone published by Einaudi, the film stars Toni Servillo, along with Lorenzo Perrotta, Serena Rossi, Leonardo Lidi, Gianluca Di Gennaro, with the friendly participation of Giovanni Ludeno, and a screenplay by Mario Martone and Ippolita di Majo.

Scherzetto: The Film’s Official Plot
A house you lived in as a child and no longer inhabit, a city you left behind, a balcony, emptiness, the voices of the street rising again with their brazen vitality, and then the duel between a grandfather and a grandson. The grandfather, Daniele Mallarico, is over seventy, a well-known illustrator who, now widowed, lives alone in Milan. The grandson is named Mario, five years old, a little rascal who talks as if printed in a book, knows everything, can do anything, explains everything. His parents are deeply proud of him. It was Betta, his daughter, who asked Daniele to return to Naples, to the family home, to look after Mario for a few days while she and her husband, Saverio, are away for a conference, but surely she could not imagine… Within four walls and a balcony, a genuine duel unfolds that pits Daniele against his ghosts.
The Film in Mario Martone’s Own Words
“I fell in love with Domenico Starnone’s Scherzetto starting from the title itself,” explains Mario Martone. “Two characters at the extremes of life, a family situation that is often comic, a single setting, and some ghosts. But while working on the film, my own ghosts also surfaced, hard to keep at bay, and I began pursuing them with the camera. Even for Toni Servillo I don’t think it was just about playing a role; it was an immersion into an unknown field, one dominated by the presence of a five-year-old child who could tell us every day: ‘enough, I’m tired’ (and it happened!). Well, in the end we did it; now everything seems so light. It seems.”
Scherzetto is a production by Mad Entertainment with Rai Cinema, in association with EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani and Picomedia, a project produced and distributed with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture.
