Justin Hartley has starred in numerous successful TV series, but in recent years he has been primarily associated with Tracker, which airs in the United States on CBS and streams in Italy on Disney+. Now in its fourth season, the series follows Colter Shaw, a man endowed with a talent that enables him to locate missing people. Over the seasons, his brother has also appeared by his side, played by Jensen Ackles, who will have a role in the new season. Reflecting on Tracker‘s future, the showrunner has considered the supporting characters and the parts they might play in the storyline, as well as an intriguing aspect about the main character: what would happen if he couldn’t solve all the cases he works on?
Tracker 4, the showrunner previews the key themes to be addressed in the upcoming episodes
The fourth season of Tracker will involve the supporting cast more deeply, including Randy and Mel Day, portrayed by Chris Lee and Cassady McClincy Zhang, while also giving Reenie the chance to develop a romantic connection. Colter Shaw, the lead, will have plenty to contend with, and in a recent interview the showrunner and executive producer Elwood Reid offered a preview of how the protagonist will be depicted in these new episodes: “As I’ve said many times, one of the strengths of the series, I believe, is the strong emotional component of the storytelling. There’s nothing wrong with that; I’ve shot millions of scenes, but in most police procedurals the person is already dead and you’re simply trying to deliver answers to their loved ones. Here, however, the loved ones are the people who hire you. They’re the ones who are seeking. There is a powerful emotional tension and a countdown for every case, and Colter, most of the time, manages to resolve it with a happy ending.”
Regarding this, the showrunner teased a new element for this season: “One of the things we’re working on this year is: What would happen if he didn’t always succeed, or if some of these cases ventured into morally grayer, darker territory? And, most importantly, is there a longer arc we can begin to outline, with a larger villain potentially in circulation? These are the things we’re shaping. I believe that reaching a fourth season isn’t an opportunity for a complete reset, but rather for reshuffling the deck a bit and doing something different, because you can.”
The showrunner then reiterated that Colter’s family story has been explored and perhaps even brought to a close, but in the meantime it has given room to other aspects: “We’ve tackled the family issue and I think we’ve reached the end, making the most of everything there was to uncover. But we still know very little about Colter’s life after that troubled family, when he became a tracker and what he does between cases. So, I think there is a lot of room to explore his character and what motivates him, and to entrust him with different cases that shake him and truly test him.”
