After months of speculation, the official confirmation has arrived: Oscar winner Nicolas Cage (Spider-Noir, Leaving Las Vegas) and Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory, The Mask of Zorro), one American and the other Spanish, will be the protagonists of the upcoming fifth season of HBO’s acclaimed crime drama anthology True Detective, whose filming will begin next year, ahead of a debut on screens that in Italy will take place on Sky and in streaming on NOW and HBO Max.
True Detective 5: What is known about the new season?
Details at the moment are scant. We only know that Cage will portray a certain Henry Logan and that Banderas will play a certain Rai García. More than a year ago, when the rumor surfaced that Cage would be part of the upcoming cast, his character was described as a New York detective involved in the case at the heart of the new season. Furthermore, long before it emerged that this would be set precisely in the state of New York, more specifically in Jamaica Bay, a lagoon in the southern part of Long Island. All these details, however, have not yet been confirmed by HBO.
Issa López, writer and director of the fourth season (also known as True Detective: Night Country), will remain at the helm after succeeding the series’ creator and supervising the first three seasons Nic Pizzolatto, who will not return this time either. Cage and Banderas take up the baton from Jodie Foster, Emmy-winning for her performance, preceded in turn by Mahershala Ali in the third season, by Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in the second, and by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the first.
