True Detective to Reunite Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas for Season 5

The fifth season of ‘True Detective’ is starting to take shape. The definitive investigative-drama anthology will cover its upcoming story with two high-profile leads who can easily be compared to the figures we’ve met in previous years. They will be none other than Nicolas Cage, who arrives after delving into the secrets of ‘Spider-Noir’, and Antonio Banderas.

The announcement follows Cage’s confirmation of his role in the series last week, with Banderas now joining the project as his partner. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and will be overseen by showrunner Issa López, who previously helmed the series’ fourth season. At present, there is no projected release date for the new episodes.

Nicolas Cage is ready to be the definitive detective alongside Antonio Banderas in the upcoming season of ‘True Detective’

Mystery in Jamaica Bay

Early plot details for this season are on the table. The storyline will take us to Jamaica Bay, an estuary located in the state of New York, United States. There, we will meet detective Henry Logan, played by Nicolas Cage, and his partner Rai García, portrayed by Antonio Banderas. The two will have to collaborate to solve a case that, on its own, would be completely out of reach for them.

Traditionally the series treats each season as its own standalone story, but this time there might be a bit more of a throughline connecting to the past. Issa López has confirmed that there are some “important connections” between the events in Alaska in the fourth season and what we will see in this one. That season was led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, who investigated a disappearance of eight men at a scientific research station that nearly brushed against the paranormal.

Cage on the Radar

The figure who seems to already be laying the groundwork for his entry into the series is Nicolas Cage. In recent weeks he has spoken clearly about Marvel not being the same as it used to be, remarks that tended to highlight that the mystery should be the focal point of those stories. It’s something he delivered abundantly in ‘Spider-Noir’ and, in retrospect, we can understand as preparation for his next career move: securing the lead role in ‘True Detective’.
