Twisted Metal Arrives in Italy: Post-Apocalyptic Series Now on Sky and Streaming on NOW

The madness of Twisted Metal has finally reached Italy! Of the many ways the world could tumble into chaos, the one told in the action comedy starring Marvel Cinematic Universe megastar Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) stands out as among the most original and disorienting: an apocalypse on four wheels, brimming with madness, violence, and an irresistible dose of irony. The series, available exclusively on Sky and streaming only on NOW from today, August 31, premieres every Monday with four half-hour episodes, and is inspired by the eponymous vehicular combat video game franchise that began in the 1990s. In the United States, public and critical success paved the way for two seasons, with a third on the horizon. The first two installments will be broadcast by Sky and NOW without interruption.

On Sky and NOW: engines, chaos and adrenaline with Twisted Metal

Created by the writers behind Deadpool Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick along with Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai), Twisted Metal imagines an America that has been utterly transformed, where civilization is now a distant memory and moving from one city to another can put your life at risk. It depicts a post-apocalyptic world ruled by bands of raiders, criminals, and fortified communities, where the streets themselves have become the theater of a real four-wheeled war. This is the backdrop for John Doe, the lead character portrayed by Mackie—a lone courier who roams the nation behind the wheel of his car, Evelyn.

In this new order, people like John are dubbed “lattaio” and perform a job that is as simple as it is dangerous: transporting goods and packages from one city to the next, all while facing armed gangs and rivals willing to go to any lengths to seize the load. John also carries a very personal burden: he remembers almost nothing of his childhood or his past, except for a partially burned photograph that could hold the key to his identity. The turning point arrives when John receives a mission that could alter his life forever. After reaching New San Francisco—one of the few cities still protected by towering walls—he encounters Raven (the screen legend Neve Campbell), the formidable leader of the settlement. She offers him a deal: he must reach New Chicago, retrieve a mysterious package, and return it to her. In exchange, John could finally secure what he desires above all else—a safe haven inside the walls of New San Francisco, far from the dangers of the road.

The journey, of course, proves to be far more complicated than expected. Along the way, John meets Quieta (Stephanie Beatriz, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), a determined and wary young woman who joins him out of necessity. Quieta carries a score to settle with Stone (Oscar-nominee for Sideways – In Travel with Jack Thomas Haden Church), a former police officer who, after the collapse of society, built his own paramilitary outfit and seeks to impose his own sense of order and justice. For Quieta, Stone is primarily the man responsible for her brother’s death, and vengeance becomes one of the central objectives of her journey.

As a fragile alliance forms between John and Quieta—whose temperaments, goals, and approaches to peril clash—their voyage gradually becomes about more than a simple mission: both are forced to confront their pasts, the people they have lost, and a world in which the rules have plainly collapsed. The world also includes Sweet Tooth (the wrestler Joe Seanoa), arguably the wildest and most recognizable character in the Twisted Metal universe. A colossal killer who wears a clown mask and pilots an iconic ice-cream truck, Sweet Tooth is as unpredictable as he is deadly, turning every encounter into a threat and perfectly embodying the offbeat spirit of the series.

The road to New Chicago becomes a long drive through an America that no longer resembles the one we know, where armored cars, high-speed chases, and last-ditch clashes are everyday occurrences. And just when John seems poised to obtain what he has long desired, the plot takes a new turn, opening the door to the true heart of Twisted Metal mythology: a deadly automobile tournament organized by the mysterious Calypso (three-time Emmy nominee for BARRY Anthony Carrigan), in which contestants vie for a prize that, at least in theory, can grant their deepest wish.
