It had been conceived as a miniseries, but it will now span a second season. Sky has announced the renewal of Under Salt Marsh – Secrets Submerged, the British crime thriller starring Kelly Reilly and Rafe Spall. The latter will return in the new episodes taking up the role of detective Eric Bull, engaged in a fresh investigation.
Under Salt Marsh 2: How the Story Continues
Created, written, and directed by Claire Oakley, who will come back for the six new episodes, Under Salt Marsh tells, in its first season—available in Italy exclusively on Sky and streaming only on NOW—the story of Jackie Ellis (Reilly), a former detective who, after leaving the police following a traumatic case, works as a teacher in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen. When Jackie discovers the lifeless body of Cefin, one of her young pupils, apparently drowned in the marshes, the incident brings to light another unsolved case from three years earlier: the disappearance of Jackie’s granddaughter, an investigation that had ruined her career and strained her relations with her family. The investigation is taken up by Eric Bull (Spall), Jackie’s former partner. The two share a difficult dynamic, but Jackie is convinced that the new crime and the old case are linked. The two are thus forced to collaborate, while in the close-knit community secrets, resentments, and illicit activities that had been hidden for years begin to surface.
The second season will relocate the series to a remote Scottish mining village, a place sinking beneath the weight of its own secrets, where a murder investigation will bring Bull closer to the truth about his past. Filming is scheduled to begin next year in Scotland.
