Vigil Season 3: Arctic Ice Investigation on Sky and NOW

After a nuclear submarine and an investigation tied to the military world, Vigil shifts scenery once more, sending its two leads to the frozen expanse of the Arctic. The third season of the British investigative series debuts on October 18, 2026 exclusively on Sky and streaming only on NOW, with six new episodes released at a pace of two per week until November 1. At the center are again Amy Silva and Kirsten Longacre, played by Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie, grappling with a murder at a research station in Svalbard that involves a secret mission by the British special forces and threatens to trigger an international crisis. Capable of uniting investigation, international tension, and emotional depth, Vigil is one of the most acclaimed British thriller series of the moment.

Vigil 3: The Plot, Between Svalbard and Scotland

The second season, aired in 2023, debuted with nearly nine million viewers, placing it among BBC’s three most-watched drama series of the year. The new investigation, however, begins with the killing of a member of the British special forces involved in a secret operation at a remote Arctic research station. The mission is tied to the attempt to recover a Chinese scientist who has come into possession of a potentially decisive scientific discovery. During the operation, the team is attacked and the woman manages to escape. Subsequently, the discovery of the dead serviceman in a Russian enclave leads Amy and Kirsten to reconstruct a tale that involves interests far broader than the single murder. The Arctic is indeed at the center of competition among several nations, eager to control the territory and its resources. The changes in polar climate contribute to making the region increasingly strategic, while energy interests and international rivalries complicate the investigations. Even collaboration among authorities on the ground is delicate: to avoid tensions, representatives of the different countries must be involved in handling the case, including the Russian side.

The story also unfolds in Scotland, where Amy pursues a lead that points to a researcher connected to the Arctic events. A new episode of violence widens the investigative field further, linking military operations with scientific research and interests tied to energy resources. The two detectives must determine what links the events and identify those responsible before the situation degenerates into an international confrontation.

Not only investigations: Vigil also explores the protagonists’ personal lives

The third season finds Amy and Kirsten in a new phase of life. Having met in the first season and faced Kirsten’s pregnancy in the second, the two leads are now married and have two children. Kirsten’s return to work after maternity coincides with a fresh investigation that takes her far from home. Amy must likewise confront professional responsibilities and the choices demanded by an increasingly complex case. The distance and differing work needs make balancing professional commitments with family life more challenging. The relationship between the two detectives continues to intertwine with the investigations. Mutual trust and the ability to find a balance between career and family become part of their journey, as case developments require collaboration and rapid decisions.

The Cast of Vigil Season 3

Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster) returns to the role of Chief Inspector Amy Silva, while Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) resumes the role of Inspector Kirsten Longacre. Alongside the two leads we see Dominic Mafham as Sir Ian Downing and Gary Lewis in the role of the investigative superintendent Robertson. Among the new additions are Naomi Yang, who plays microbiologist Shen Jia, and Amy Manson, in the role of geologist Lorna McCallister. Tornike Gogrichiani portrays Colonel Fyodor, while Steven Miller and Benjamin Wainwright play the operators of the British Special Boat Service, Mark Cunningham and Oli Pickford.

Completing the cast are Danusia Samal as Jasmine Kelly and Eric Godon as Mayor Korotayev. Created by Tom Edge, Vigil is a World Productions production in association with ITV Studios for the BBC. The third season’s direction is headed by Gareth Bryn and Faye Gilbert.
