The opening two installments of VisionQuest end with an unexpected sacrifice that has deeply unsettled MCU fans from the very start. The victim in question is a character who has taken part in this universe since Phase 1 and had to sacrifice themselves for a greater good. But what happened? Below we will reference what occurred in the first two episodes of VisionQuest, so we recommend proceeding only after you have watched them in full.
VisionQuest and the sacrifice of that character explained: why?
Five years have passed since the debut of WandaVision on streaming on Disney+, and Paul Bettany has returned, bringing Vision back to the screen but grappling with an identity crisis. After regaining Vision’s memories, White Vision is trying to give them emotional meaning, which nevertheless eludes his understanding. To support his integration into the human world, Vision has called on other AI, each equipped with a specialization. Even Ultron has been able to contribute, albeit kept isolated from the others as he is deemed dangerous.
By the end of the second episode, one of Vision’s treasured AI assistants tragically loses its life, hiding a much deeper meaning. MCU fans will know that initially it was Paul Bettany who lent his voice to JARVIS, the artificial intelligence that long aided Tony Stark in his creations, starting with Iron Man in 2008. JARVIS, however, is inspired by a real person, the same Edwin Jarvis who served the Stark family even before Tony’s birth, as a faithful right-hand man to his father Howard. To portray him in Agent Carter for the first time was James D’Arcy, and the actor has reprises the same role also in VisionQuest.
But why is JARVIS dead? What happened so destabilizing to favor his departure? As explained in the first episode, Vision has a bounty on his head and the mercenary Paladin is hunting him far and wide. It is not clear who commissioned the job, but Paladin is a tough nut to crack and, by the end of the second episode, he manages to wound Vision’s vibranium body with adamantium bullets, a material known to fans from the X-Men thanks to Wolverine, and which seems to be effective even against Vision, who comes away injured. At that point Ultron suggests to the other AI within Vision’s mind that they might save him if one of them chose to sacrifice themselves. And who better than his security detail? JARVIS makes the decision and volunteers: through his selfless act, he keeps Vision and the other AI safe.
