VisionQuest Brings Back an Unexpected Villain from Tony Stark’s Past (Spoiler)

VisionQuest continues to draw inspiration from Iron Man. Beyond the various AI of Tony Stark that populate Vision’s mind, the new episodes released for streaming on Disney+ have also called into action a character from the first film starring Robert Downey Jr. Specifically, this is a villain who gave Tony Stark trouble and, in this case, seems to have arrived at the right moment to raise the stakes. But who is he, and above all, why has he been brought back into action after almost 20 years of absence in the MCU?

Attention: what follows will refer to what happened in the fifth and sixth episodes of VisionQuest, available for streaming on Disney+, so we invite you to continue reading only after you have finished watching.

VisionQuest: Who Is Raza, the Villain Well Known to Tony Stark Reappearing in the MCU After Almost 20 Years of Absence (SPOILER)

Tony Stark has had to contend with numerous threats: in Iron Man, for instance, he had to keep Raza, portrayed by Faran Tahir, at bay, a character who later unexpectedly reappears in the new episodes of VisionQuest. But why? In Iron Man, Raza was introduced as the local leader of the Ten Rings organization (further explored in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) who abducts Tony Stark and imprisons him in a cave, compelling him to build for them a Jericho missile. Raza does not know that that moment actually marks the birth of Tony Stark’s first suit, giving rise then to Iron Man.

VisionQuest has revealed what happened to this character after Obadiah Stane’s betrayal, who had hired him: apparently, Raza spent the last years drifting through the torture chambers of the Ten Rings and then distancing himself from the organization, becoming a bounty hunter in turn. In Shang-Chi, the organization introduced Xu Wenwu as its leader and, after what happened in that film, the leadership passed into the hands of Xu Xialing, Shang-Chi’s sister.

Raza returns after almost twenty years to the MCU and has every intention of eliminating Padalino and seizing Vision. He actually storms the place accompanied by an army, but that is not enough to counter Vision. But Raza was not introduced as a new main antagonist, rather as another bounty hunter hired by the Client after Padalino’s failure in the mission. It is still unclear who lies behind the orders: who could possibly desire Vision so ardently?
