What will become of Vision after VisionQuest? A question that has long haunted the most devoted fans of the character introduced by Paul Bettany in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and which could bring his narrative arc to a close at the end of VisionQuest, as many fear. Addressing the future of the character within the expansive dynamics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was Paul Bettany himself who spoke about it.
VisionQuest, Paul Bettany does not rule out Vision’s return in the Marvel reboot — would it make sense?
In the beginning Paul Bettany joined the MCU as the voice of JARVIS, Tony Stark’s AI, but later he became a physical presence as the actor behind Vision, introduced in Age of Ultron and then associated primarily with Wanda Maximoff. In fact, together they led as co-protagonists also in WandaVision: VisionQuest is a direct spin-off and the third installment of a trilogy titled Wanda Trilogy, streaming on Disney+.
More than ten years have passed since Paul Bettany’s physical introduction to the MCU, but it remains unclear what will become of Vision after the Disney+ miniseries, especially given that the reboot Marvel Studios plans to offer to the universe following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for December 2027. In fact, two ensemble films dedicated to the Avengers are on the horizon, and so far neither has confirmed Vision’s involvement.
Reflecting on the character’s future after VisionQuest, Paul Bettany told Square Mile: “These are decisions that lie with those higher up in the hierarchy, not with me. But yes, I love playing Vision. As long as there are interesting, exciting and original stories to tell, I’ll keep doing it if I’m asked to participate.” Regarding the character’s popularity, he added: “The thing I’ve noticed among the fans that unites them with the Marvel series—and the reason there are so many young Vision fans, in their twenties—is that all characters strike a chord with their audience. Vision’s bond is that he’s in a constant state of change and is always trying to understand who he is… I think that’s why young people are drawn to him, because they are deeply engaged in figuring out who they are and what their purpose is. It’s a matter of urgency. So Vision always needs to embark on this quest.”
The future of the MCU remains uncertain but could offer several pathways to explore: for instance, in Marvel comics there are stories where Vision explores his evil side, but fans might not welcome this turn of events. Another possibility could see Vision as a mentor to the Young Avengers, considering that his sons Billy and Tommy could play a more significant role in upcoming MCU projects.
