VisionQuest: Identity, Fathers and Sons in the Marvel Universe — Video Interview with Paul Bettany & Ruaridh Mollica

Paul Bettany and Ruaridh Mollica arrived at the Rome Film Festival to present the first two episodes of the new Marvel series VisionQuest and to preview, in advance, the first ten minutes of the third episode. We spoke with them, and, alongside us, they explored some of the central themes of the story, from the unconventional father‑son bond to the challenge of accepting one’s own identity, up to the need to feel heard and understood. Bettany, who returns to play Vision in this series that completes the trilogy begun with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along, also talked about how the series examines fatherhood through literary and cinematic allusions such as Pinocchio and Frankenstein. Mollica, who portrays Tommy Maximoff, reflected, among other things, on the path his character takes and the necessity of finding the strength to accept himself. Watch below our exclusive video interview.

VisionQuest: the plot and the cast of the Marvel series

Created by Terry Matalas, VisionQuest follows Vision, the android portrayed by Paul Bettany, who after escaping those who wanted to turn him into a weapon and recovering memories of his past life, must still figure out who he truly is. In search of a new meaning for his existence, he turns to the AI personalities embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S. and the infamous Ultron (James Spader). His shadowed life is upended when a bounty on his head forces him to flee alongside Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who could be his reincarnated son Tommy Maximoff (Ruaridh Mollica). On his journey through memory, emotion, and identity, he will have to confront old and new allies, but also dangerous adversaries. The cast also includes Todd Stashwick as Paladin, a bounty hunter on Vision’s trail, and T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, an android driven by a desire for revenge.

VisionQuest is available exclusively on Disney+ from October 14, with the first two episodes, and brings to the heart of the Marvel Universe a story that, beyond androids and artificial intelligences, tackles deeply human questions such as the parent‑child relationship, the search for self, and the courage to find one’s place in the world.
