It seems not everyone has forgotten Spider-Man’s true identity. In No Way Home, Peter Parker asked Doctor Strange to cast a spell so that everyone would forget the true identity of his masked hero, but that decision carried devastating consequences that compromised the Multiverse, forcing Peter to make a drastic choice: everyone would erase all memory of him, including MJ and Ned. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, four years have passed since then, and Peter has moved on alone, determined to keep his secret safe and also protect his friends, giving them the chance to live their lives without drama. Yet VisionQuest has shown that not everyone has forgotten who Peter Parker is.
VisionQuest and that reference to Peter Parker explained: Does EDITH know who Spider-Man is?
In the sixth episode of VisionQuest, EDITH clearly hints at her past in a conversation with Vision, explaining that she had the chance to work with a teenager who would influence her approach to the world. When Vision launches into a frustrated tirade about handling teenagers, EDITH steps in, explaining that she understands him perfectly, since her first boss was a high school student. This is a clear reference to Peter Parker, with whom she interacted in Spider-Man: Far From Home, accompanying him as a faithful AI after Tony Stark’s gift. But if EDITH has always kept her memories of Spider-Man, sharing them with the other AIs in Vision’s mind, then why hasn’t this information leaked over the years between No Way Home and Brand New Day?
The most natural explanation is that perhaps Peter Parker has never been considered a priority or a real threat among the various MCU superheroes, and none of the AIs, not even Ultron, saw any advantage in revealing Spider-Man’s identity. Ultron, after all, has no emotional bond with Peter Parker, since Tom Holland first portrayed him in Captain America: Civil War after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and by then Ultron had already been defeated. This means Ultron never had a real motive to hunt him down or stand in his way.
But what does it really mean that EDITH has memories of Peter Parker? Does she remember everything or only fragments? And, most importantly, could this influence Spider-Man’s future, or is it simply a line tossed out for VisionQuest?
